I heard from a teacher that you can teach in Korea even if you have a criminal record in Korea because immigraton policy only requires them to check criminal records from the teacher's home country.

This person has a criminal record in Korea, said it won't be a problem getting a job, and knows another teacher already teaching on an E-2 visa with a criminal record from Korea.

Simply amazing!

What offence was he convicted of? Did he have a parking ticket or was he convicted of human trafficking? The nature of the crime might make a difference.

so once you have an E2 visa the first time, you can go to Korea, go on a crime spree, and keep it up indefinitely with a new E2 each year?

think of the crimes... Twisted Evil

You heard from a teacher? Well, hear from this teacher: it's not true. Having just renewed an E2, I had to supply a Korean police report.

All EPIK SMOE etc public school jobs now do require you to get a Korean police check.
I guess the hagwons are lagging behind and immigration is not asking for it yet. It will come in for sure, especially once a poster is putting it on this forum!

How do you get the Korean police check? Go right into the lion's den and ask for it? I feel like they might have a record of how many times I haven't bowed to elders, and deport me. Ha ha. Terrible foreigner!

The teacher beat up a Korean who had to be hospitalized.

The teacher said the Korean started it, but the judge ruled both were at fault, hence the criminal record.

The teacher hired an attorney and tried to have the verdict overturned but was unsuccessful.

The teacher is now back at work with a new E-2 visa. No Problem.

Oh, let's take a guess. said Teacher was drunk and started to hit on the Korean guys girl. When asked to stop, he got belligerent and picked a fight. Sounds like a good guy that deserves to be here teaching kids. Glad the system is working

Ah. I see what you mean. Yes, it does seem strange that they don't already check the Korean records for people with a previous visa.

That said, I don't know if brawling once would be enough to have your visa application refused. I don't know though. Seems like one of those border line issues that cause problems but might be let through in the end.

wait, so was he fully convicted? what was the penalty?

it seems as though either the offence was not deemed serious enough to deny him another E2, or the conviction is not actually in the system.

the latter seems pretty improbable, though.

Well, since he paid a lawyer about $3,000 to have the verdict set aside, he felt it must have been serious enough, until later when he found out it didn't matter anyway because Immigration dpesn't check to see if teachers have criminal records locally.

The teacher has already taught temporarily on his passport in a previous job and worked at another location other than the one authorized in his E-2 Visa (didn't ask Immigration for permission), so he knows that Immigration doesn't have the resources to check on everyone.

Still, it makes you wonder.

Or maybe the teacher was walking with his Korean girl friend when the Korean guy decided to spit on the girl and then throw his cigarette at her. The teacher, being an honorable man, beat the tar out of the racist scumbag Korean man.

Sounds like the kind of man I want protecting my children! Very Happy

But we don't actually know the details, since information is being omitted. What is the more likely scenario?
