I'm going to Osaka this weekend with a friend. Wondering where the best area is in the city to base ourselves out of. We want to be fairly central and have a lot around to do.
Is Shin-Osaka where we should head initially? Or are there more central/happening area?
Anything anyone would recommend seeing? We arrive Friday afternoon and leave Sunday afternoon, so we'll probably be sticking to the city proper....
Thanks~~~ |

I wouldn't say there's nothing to do in the Shin-Osaka area, but it's not the main downtown area and it's a place many would probably not go to unless they were taking the Shinkansen.
The main drag is around Dotonbori, which is down towards Nanba (sometimes romanised as Namba) station. Well, "down" as in south from Shin-Osaka; however, if you're flying to Kansai Airport it's the opposite direction. Kansai is quite a way south of Osaka City.
In Dotonbori you're not that far from Osaka Castle, which is worth seeing. There's also the Panasonic Center.
One of the main attractions for Japanese visitors to Osaka is Universal Studios Japan, which is a little out of the downtown area towards the west, but still not so far away.
To be honest, I'm not that big a fan of Osaka and I usually suggest people visit Kobe (only 20 minutes away), which I think is a much nicer city. Although you may decide you don't have time for that. |

I'm a big fan of Osaka. Downtown is, as previously mentioned, Namba/Dotonbori. Bars, bars, bars. Eats, eats, eats. Neon, neon, neon.
You can walk to Osaka's electronics district...Den den town.
you can also walk to Shinsekai. "New World". bit of a joke as its populated by Japanese ajeosshis in standing bars, but a slightly "seedier" side of Japan than you normally see. Delicious kushi-katsu to be had in the area and a lot of said standing bars with cheap beer. Also a huge redlight district (Tobita) with white paper lanterns signifying shops if you want to see that - no photos of course.
The uptown is Umeda. I guess there is also nightlife up there but I think it's just famous for the night view you can get from the skyscraper ( forget the name).
The Aquarium and attached fair (ferris wheel) are also cool for an afternoon.
Anyway have a blast. |
