Hi, I'm having a hard time finding a lot of detailed info and photos of Daejeon. To anyone who currently lives/works there, or who's visited there for a reasonable amount of time, what's it like? Specifically, I'd love to know:

(1) How's the environment? Is it pretty or is it another large, polluted city?
(2) Is there a decent expat population?
(3) If I miss food and items from the western world, are there enough shops and restaurants to carry me over?
(4) Are there enough fun clubs, bars, and nearby places to visit to keep me relatively entertained?
(5) How long does it take to get to Seoul?
(6) What's it like teaching there?

Thanks! I appreciate any info.

As far as I know, No one in Korea has ever been to Daejeon.

Having not been there, but knowing it's a decent sized city, you are likely to find most of the modern amenities, it's only a couple hours from Seoul.

Please reword your title and you might get some serious responses

1. Compared to Seoul it's tiny and clean....compared to most smaller cities in Korea, it's large and a little polluted (I would say it's the least polluted of the big cities in Korea though)

2. Same as #1...it would all depend on what you consider decent. There will certainly be hundreds and hundreds of foreigners there and foreigner bars.

3. Yes....some Seoul-or-bust folk will argue otherwise, but they are wrong.

4. Clubs? Probably not...Korean clubs suck for the most part, especially outside of Seoul. Bars...every other business in this country is a bar.

5. 2 hours

6. The same as teaching anywhere.

I have never lived in Daejon, but out of the bigger cities in Korea that I have visited I think that it seemed to be the nicest.....but I have almost zero interest in living in Seoul, so if you're looking for metropolitan then you might be disappointed.

Actually, it's only one hour from Daejeon to Seoul on the KTX. Which could be a consideration for questions 2, 3, and 4 as well, since that is pretty convenient.

Speaking of convenience, Deajeon is extremely conveniently located where it sits at the fork of the train line. In addition to the proximity to Seoul, you can also shoot down to Busan in about 2 hours, or Mokpo on the southwest coast in about 2.5.

if you are looking for a place that's like Seoul, Daejeon is not it. I've been there to work, hated it and left. If you want to experience Korea, just go to Seoul. There is only 1 train line, so you will be taking buses and cabs. Depending on where you live, nightlife is really limited. Check out the population density. There aren't that many people there and in turn, there aren't that many expats. The good thing is that since it's a small city, the air quality is better.

(1) How's the environment? Is it pretty or is it another large, polluted city? Compared to Seoul, much much cleaner, and walking down the street doesn't feel like you are breaking through a defensive line.

(2) Is there a decent expat population? It's ok, but don't rush into it. Choose your friends carefully.

(3) If I miss food and items from the western world, are there enough shops and restaurants to carry me over? You'll be fine.

(4) Are there enough fun clubs, bars, and nearby places to visit to keep me relatively entertained? Dunsan/Timeworld is the new downtown, Eunhang dong is the former downtown, and gungdong is your backup.

(5) How long does it take to get to Seoul? 40mins on the KTX

(6) What's it like teaching there? Depends where you teach.

A few words of advice, since you'll be working in a smaller town, remember the rule, small towns talk. So don't go face-planting on the street after a drinking binge. Chances are, the people you see in bars are the same people you'll see at the movie theater or restaurants. You don't want a bad image.

The Korean girls that speak english there are like the fat american girls in the states: overrated and getting way too much attention that they deserve. Pick up a Korean class at one of the local universities and you'll find yourself with a better selection range. Trust me on this one.

The Korean guys there (as with the rest of Korean) are a mixed bag. The ones that grew up in the states? I pass on some of them. You want to hear what they think, go to/lookup koreansentry and read some of their forum entries. It's like the Diet Coke of the AES. For the K guy that wants all the hate, but none of the stigma of joining an official hate group.

The cleanest theater there is the star 6 on top of the galleria department store. Decent sound system, easy to find a seat. There's a CGV (formerly Primus) around there too, but that whole area/building/theater is really grimy.

Best advice: Daejeon is a good city to test your Korean mettle. If you can survive there for a year, Seoul or any other city you go to should be cake.

Shout out to Kids College in Dunsan dong, thanks for the 10th month firing. We had fun with the labor board.

I recently visited Daejeon.
I am not trying to be a d!(k, but you must have literally done no research before posting.
I typed Daejeon into google and found enough things to do to fill a 3-day weekend and we didn't even get to do everything on our agenda.
If all you want to do is drink while you are there, don't bother going. Seoul would certainly be a better city to go clubbing in, but there are plenty of cultural activities to fill a weekend.
My girlfriend and I even managed to have a few drinks there as well. But we also went to museums, saw a movie, did some shopping. We were going to go to a baseball game, but it got rained out.

So next time you are going to post something like this, please don't be so lazy.
I just spent more time responding to your post than you did researching Daejeon.

My husband and I live here, we've been here for over 6 months now.
1) It's small compared to Seoul, but nice. You can drive across it in a half hour. (Provided traffic isn't stand still.)
2) There's a fairly large expat population. Lots of folks living in Dunsan area, the rest are spread out around the city. In my area, there are about 20 of us living. We're all just one big group who gets together often.
3) There are definitely enough shops, if you're the right size. There are quite a few foreign restaurants, and if you're craving, it's a super short 1 hour KTX ride to Seoul (which answers your #5 question)
4) The night life can get redundant, but there are two main areas which we party in. There will always be places near where you live, plus going downtown. There aren't many tourist attractions other then Expo Park and Kumdori Land, but there are LOTS of mountains to hike.
6) Depends on if you're teaching public or hagwon. It's the same everywhere though, no matter where you are in Korea. You could luck out and get a great school, or end up with the crap end of the stick and get an awful school. You take that risk no matter where you live.

It's a very nice place to live, in my opinion, if you make the best of it. True, it's not Seoul. But there are LOTS of downsides to living in Seoul, and I think Daejeon is good for covering those.

If you end up working here, send me a pm and I'll introduce you to the Songchon crew. Razz

I went to Daejon for a visit once and found it under-developed and dull. I'ts more of a large hick town than a cosmopolitan city. The train station belies the place. Cool

Honestly, I'm not sure what Chilgok is talking about with the cab fare, I live on the outskirts of town (basically as far out as you can get while still within city limits) and it's like 10,000 won AT MOST to get to the other side of town. And if you want to do that, get a cab to the subway line and take the subway. Yes, there is only one subway line, but if you're in the downtown areas (Eunhang-dong, Dunsan-dong) then you're on the line and you're fine. Or you're only a 4,000 won cab ride away.

Funny how people who have just come as tourists seem to know a lot about the city.... not saying that they don't, but I would take advice from someone who actually lives here rather then someone who spent a weekend here. (Not trying to start a fight or anything, trust me...)

I will delete my post in shame, and not offer my point of view on Daejeon ever again. I humbly ask your forgiveness.

I deleted it because you wanted to go all Daejeon Smackdown on me for voicing an opinion.

But that's cool. Daejeon is your territory, so I will refer any users asking questions related to Daejeon to you, since you're the expert and you don't want me posting on Daejeon related threads.
