I just opened an account at the Itaewon branch because I wanted an international ATM card. I have two questions...

1. If you have one, does it say "card valid only in Korea" on the front of it? The woman at the counter swore to me that it would work overseas, despite what it says right on the front of the card. ...I'm a bit skeptical.

2. How much of a fee have people paid when using the card overseas (specifically in China)

Thanks

Is it the purple global card with the Visa logo on it? If not, go back and get the expat global visa check card. Take the main headquarters KEB number with you. If you can't get the card, talk to the manager, if the manager gives you the runaround, call the main office.

It's purple, has a visa symbol, and it says "power check" on it. I got no runaround--they swear it will work overseas. I just think it's odd that it says "valid only in Korea" on the front of it.

Mine says "Global" on the front and it's worked overseas. It also says "Valid for overseas ATMs" in small print in the back.

It probably WON'T work overseas... I certainly wouldn't depend on it until it is CONFIRMED by actual use that it works overseas.

Heck, even with their "international" cards they often don't work overseas.

caffeinated,
I just checked their website....the purple one that says "global" on the front is in the credit card section.

Is yours a credit card or an ATM card?

Yep, mine is the purple one. Don't know why it would be in the credit section since, as it says, no credit needed. It's a VISA debit card, really. Works like a credit card at stores and online shops based in Korea, but it's useless for shopping overseas and with non-Korean websites (it says "invalid for overseas purchasing merchandise" in the back).

Once you figure out if it is the right card, make sure you call them and have them authorize the card to work overseas. It is a really easy process that takes 2 minutes, but you have to do it to get the card to work. After it was authorized for overseas use I had no problems using it in Macau. I still have not checked the fees, but if no one can answer that questions I will look it up when I get home.

I just called the customer service center for the card. The woman told me that this card will work in ATMs overseas. The "valid only in Korea" is in regards to the check card purchasing.

She told me, though, that it will only work in ATMs if I signed up for the "foreign exchange regulation." I assume the bank did that, but I'll have to check.

I guess I won't really know until next month when I actually try to use it.

Thanks reappropriated

I think maybe you're talking about the "foreign exchange regulation."

To be clear, do you have the "power check" card or the global card that Caffeinated has?

Don't assume! Check! About 12 months ago I went to KEB and told them that I wanted an international debit card BECAUSE I was going to the Philippines. They gave me one, but when I went to the Philippines, it didn't work. I went back and the lady hadn't registered it for overseas use!

I would advise going to a different KEB branch and asking them if it's registered for overseas use. You have to be explicit. The same thing then happened to my KEB credit card a few months later. Luckily I tried to buy travel insurance online with it and it was rejected. This meant I could get it registered before my holiday to America. Sheesh. KEB is the best we've got really, but they're not all that on the ball.

I can verify that the purple Global Card does work overseas. Well, at least in Bali and the US. You can only use it as a Visa card in Korea, but I did take out money from an ATM in Bali and the US. Hope this helps.

Mine workd in ATMs in Bali, Thailand, and Canada...

It's a purple card with "POwER CHECK" and "not valid outside of Korea" but I think the not valid part refers to the special secret numbers on the back that let ya buy pizza from Dominos Korea online.

It doesn't work for non korean internt shopping. Not even Air Asia.
