do any of you live there, and if so, could you please tell me your impression of the place- things to do, good points and bad, etc?

| I used to live and work there in a TOEFL hagwon. It's a nice area. There are a lot of restaurants, stores, and banks there. A Lotte Mart and post office are within walking distance. There are quite a few 서양인 there, too. The only thing that I would say is bad about it is that it is far from central Seoul. On the plus side there are a few buses there, and subway lines 4, 6, 7 and close by, and line 1 is not far away, either. |

Well serviced by buses + subway, decent shopping (Lotte, 2001 Outlet), usual selection of restaurants, 45 odd minutes into downtown....so like a lot areas in Seoul. Certainly is quieter than living downtown.
I liked living there, Sanggye-dong (nearby) is famous for its mountains and hiking there is good. Plus loads of great restaurants for all the hikers on Sundays. |

Nowon is pretty kickass, it has an environment all it's own.
Not many foreigners there, so you can really enjoy it.
Only downside is that there are some Korean-only places, and unless you know the area well, you won't be able to find anything to do past 11pm (they exist, but you have to explore for a few weeks before you find them). |

There are tons of foreigners around the Nowon area, as well as a few bars like Dragon Bar and The Metropolitan that draw them. The Nowon Station area is also packed with restaurants and hofs, providing ample alternatives to the few foreign spots. The "Korean-only" places are generally booking clubs and a lot of them will admit you if you're able to display a bit of know-how with the language. |

What does this mean? There's nothing to do past 11? What kind of things are you looking to do? What's a Korean only place?

You're going to piss Ryan off, and he's a Nowon/Dobong-gu mainstay!
The guy's talking about the booking clubs. You're not going to get turned away from anywhere else unless you're an absolute lost cause!
Then again, Ryan is home at 11:30 on a Friday. Maybe Kinerry is right! |

I can attest to being turned away. I went with three friends to hang out in the Nowon area. One of the night club doormen told my friend "You speak Korean very well but you are with foreigners" meaning we weren't allowed in. Two other places turned us down too. We ended up in a room salon because there wasn't much else to do  |

People try to hit the subway before it gets late, so it dies early.
As for Korean only places, lots of new places hold that rule. There's even a girls only bar that I've seen that basically has man servants (while it's common in Japan, this is the first I've seen in Korea).
Lots of chicken feet places, even a place called "ONDA" that serves chocolate soju.
Foreigners are NOT common here, when you see them they are usually in large groups headed to the restaurants.
This is one of my favorite places because of the lack of whities and the general layout of the area (overhead, bronx-like subway layout) gives it a special kind of atmosphere. |

Alright, I'll admit, if you can't keep up an act, you might not be allowed into a couple places geared at Korean speaking people. What do people want to do at these places anyway, just drink a little and take up the seat?
In any event, there are a ton of foreigner geared places, which are packed on the weekends. There are a set of restaurants, bars and nighclubs that open well into the morning hours that you can walk into without a Korean buddy to take care of you. This is only considering the things one might do between 11pm-7am. There are many great activities to do during the day.

| me? i'm not teaching.. i chose nowon because i found a good deal, and it seemed to be close to nature but also close to the city. sounds good so far from what people have said. |

I lived in Junggye for over two years, and I'm heading back in a week to live there again. Great neighborhood--quiet, friendly, laid-back. I go downtown every weekend, but it's great to live and work in a place that is free from the hustle and bustle you get in Myeong-dong, Dongdaemun, Itaewon, Gangnam...some of the trendier neighborhoods.
Bulam-san is not a serious hike, but it's fun and refreshing. And there are so many academies in Nowon...if your job doesn't pan out, simply walk next door with a nice tie and a resume. |
