Can it be done? If so, how? I only worked at one hogwon back in 2006, finished my contract, and a few months ago found out I was on the list. The reason I say so is because my next job will be a uni or a hogwon...NOT a public school. (Actually GEPIK or a rural public school would be my last resort back up plan)

I actually don't know what list it is. I guess it's the "main" one; the one most of the big name recruiters use for hiring those applying to hogwons. Thing is, I know someone who is married to a Korean recruiter...after they looked at my scanned and emailed picture of the first page of my passport, and typed in some info somewhere on the internet, they got back to me and told me I was on the blacklist.

I didn't do anything wrong.

I had trouble getting along with a head teacher at the beginning, as well as with class control in the beginning. Then I was too strict and some parents complained, and I guess a lot of the parents threatened to pull there kids out. It was a bad hogwon, too...no insurance, no pension, 1.5 hr classes, kindies in the morning, 10 hour shifts, no sick days, 130 hrs a month...if every job in Korea was like that, no one would stay.

How does one even see the vaunted blacklist? and why is it only for hagwons? Confused

Well, you can apply directly to hagwons or use a different recruiter who is not as diligent about checking. Maybe. I want to see where this thread goes anyway.

If it's the "main" one, they have to have proof of why they are blackmailing you.
This includes documentation of incidents and a history of problems.

Either you are not on a list that matters if you really did nothing, or you really did some bad stuff and don't want to admit it to us here.

Can you ask where this blacklist is? If they found it on the internet, could you give us the link?

Look guys, I'm as clueless as you all are about which one it is, how well used it is, what it means, etc.

I can tell you I'm definitely not hiding anything, and never did anything "serious." There were some problems with my teaching years ago when I was a noob, and troubles with kids, parents, the head teacher, etc. I never hit anyone, broke any laws, yelled at the boss, and all that stuff. I just showed up every day and did my job the best I could.

They've had the blacklist for several years now. In the beginning, it was viewable by everyone, and included stupid reasons for teachers being placed on it ("teacher doesn't smile", "teacher wouldn't volunteer to work on Saturdays", etc). Names, nationalities, Passport numbers, everything was open to the public.

Someone complained and went as far as getting the Seoul Bar Association to complain that the blacklist was defamatory and contravened the clause in the Labor Standards Act that prohibited employers from interfering with a worker's future employment.

So they made the list private. You have to be a member of the site to see it.
