Our last video on Elections has inspired one person to email us a lot. Lots of swearing, lots of threats of physical violence, and threats of reporting us to the police (for what crime though, I have no clue). So, I'd like to get him to stop contacting us.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Generally a cease and desist letter is issued by an attorney. An injunction (cease and desist order) may be issued by a court as part of a judgment. And the police/prosecutor/court may order someone to stop doing something while an investigation is pending.

Against a netizen you will need jurisdiction over them, the server, or the company that owns the servers. Otherwise there is no teeth to your demand. Telling someone in Mexico that you're going to get a Korean court order against them is ... not threatening. But again if the servers or the company are in Korea (e.g., Naver) then complain to the company.

If it's the standard Korean defamation BS and the defamer is in Korea, get a friend to translate and go to the police. They will probably do nothing but it is the cheapest option.

The elections video was pretty harmless in the grand scheme of things.

He shouldn't be threatening you with violence, but if you have free speech to post what you did, he has free speech to use nasty language.

Your youtube video got pages and pages of comments, many of which point out what the viewer found offensive, and explained why. Most of those folks couched their displeasure in gentle terms, but they all said the same things -- that your video seemed disrespectful to elders, that your "light" take on what many consider a "serious" subject is, in itself, insensitive, and that while most agree that the noise IS a problem, the manner in which you expressed your displeasure alienated those that would agree, so you definitely have no chance of persuading those on the fence, let alone those who oppose your views....

Personally, I'd pull the video down, since it didn't have the desired effect...but considering it got 67,000 views, compared to the 6,000 or so your other videos got, if you are attention-whoring, then good job, you succeeded...you don't want a "cease and desist" order, you want to drum up more views on a video that even made ME uncomfortable, as a foreigner living here. Good on ya for making an arse of yerself -- not like we have enough foreigners doing that here already.

I totally think this video can really be watched in two opposing ways:

1) Guy is lightheartedly making fun of the "style" of elections... you can tell the video is not that serious, and it's just a fun take on the Korean elections. He's even dancing, participating with the election people, getting caught up in it a little bit... but always wishing he could stop that darn music.

2) Guy is "insulting" Korean culture, imitating the dancers in a more negatively "mocking" way, and insinuating as if he (or Western culture) is superior (esp. with using English and the older Koreans possibly not understanding)

It really depends where you come from, who you are, whether you view it in either of those ways above... I could really see Koreans being offended by this... they are pretty passionate (understandably so) about having democracy in their country... they've fought long and hard to blare that music. Lots of blood has been shed for democracy here... and it's a relatively recent phenomenon ( 1988)...

Overall, I think that the poster of this video could be better off removing it because it may not be getting the intended results... it seems to me that many people, rather than feeling "this is cute" feel rather "I'm uncomfortable watching this and I don't like it."

Screw that...don't take down your video. Try to charge the guy with something. K-netizens are the craziest people in Korea and they should all be smacked down.

A suitable compromise might be to edit out the candidates names and faces. I don't really agree that you shold compromise, but this could well be a case of needs must.

Keep the wholly unacceptable amount of noise though, you don't want to lose sight of your incredibly valid point!
