I need some suggestions for comments regarding my observations of student teachers. I have to do three a day for the whole month. Its already day two and Im running out of ideas. My goal is to say something positive (not overly complementary) and non-specific as possible.
Ex.
She shows good participation in group exercise.
He helped students stay on-task.
More practice will give him confidence. (Actually, his class was a complete mess culminating with him hiding his face in his arms while other student teacher comforted him)
She followed lesson plan well.
Has appropriate time management.
Her power point activity engaged students.
Last year I gave some mild criticism in my critique and ended up having to teach specific skills to the student teachers. I would like to avoid that situation at all costs. |

I believe the words you are looking for are: "Perfect. 100 %. Needs no further training or improvement. PASS!" |

Do you at least have an observation form? This should provide all the material needed for further comments. If you need one, PM me.
The teachers should also do some kind of reflective activity post lesson, based on your comments.

Thanks for your interest ddeubel as well as oldfatfarang.
We have an observation form which is the pre-approved lesson plan. We score (pass/fail) for the different parts based on time and contents covered. Also I am expected to make three or four general comments. There is a post lesson conference which I do not intend (afterschool class obligation) The head of the student teacher program collects my evaluation form and presents my remarks. I have found the stronger comments, positve or negative, manifest into detailed explanations and debate. Hence, middle of the road comments bring little attention and less scrutiny. |

I'm confused. You are training teachers, are required to provide feedback, and are looking to half-ass it by writing down general comments? Then, if you actually do critique them accordingly, the place of employment would like you to go over their weaknesses in order to help them improve and you are trying to avoid this at all possible? Are you in the right profession?
You're getting paid to do a job (I'm assuming); do it. |

Seriously, the best thing you can do is be honest with them without destroying them. Don't write a negative ( she lost control of class), but rather How they can improve (with more focused activities, the ST can have better control of the class) |

I do not get paid to train teachers. Last year my comments were misunderstood. I'm trying to avoid these misunderstandings.
I've taught many years both home and abroad. I have a good grasp of what to say and what not to say. I also know what to do and what not to do in order to keep a job. I enjoy helping student teachers when it is needed. What I don't enjoy is spending pointless hour explaining a minor comment.
Anyway, thanks for the peptalk cubanlord. |

It's a small public school (selected students) run by an education university. |
