So I am wondering, I am really interested in teaching in South Korea, and have a lot of opportunities coming my way but a few people have mentioned some stuff about teachers in South Korea now wanting to leave because of the ongoing problems between north and south korea and the recent events in march.

Some people are telling me that teachers there are leaving and that the Canadian Government is trying to get all their teachers out of korea, and I don't know if this is true or just ppl being dramatic....I haven't read anything that can verify this information...is this a bad time to teach in South Korea??? Does anyone have any insight???

I was questioning the same thing 2 weeks ago. But I talked to a lot of people who are living there, were living there, military ppl, recruiters, etc and no one seemed concerned that it will escalate into full scale civilian violence. Per the news, even the analysts say that a chance of war is remote. I'm willing to take my chances, so I took a job and will head over in July.

Not sure about Canada, but the US warden sent a message last week stating that at this time there is no imminent threat to Americans so no one is being evacuated or anything like that.

I set up a Google News Alert for North Korea to be posted daily on the situation (although I take it with a grain of salt since I don't trust the exaggeration of the media). I also signed up for email updates from the US Embassy in Seoul and looked up information on the evacuation plan for my country if something disastrous were to happen while I was there.

No one really knows what will come of any of this, but the least we can do is be informed. I'd be interested to hear from other teachers who are already there as to their opinion (although there was another post about it like a week ago where everyone argued over whether something would happen or not...it was an interesting and amusing post if you can find it)

I'm going in 2 weeks. I'm not worried after weighing up the situation.

Canada just can't hack having the enemy at the border.... try living with that pig castro a boatride away! Laughing

But the North is all bark, no bite. And it's not like they could risk a one-on-one against US forces. Though maybe the good ol' USAF could drop their vaunted "Bat bomb" on Fearless leader's mansion.

the bat bomb was a plan to drop a bunch of bats armed with small bombs onto Germany... sort of a more efficient A-bomb with less kick but more sinisterness. Twisted Evil

Just to be on the safe side, though, try the mroe southern cities. Busan's got most of the offerings of Seoul, less of the strategic target on its back! Smile

The US Embassy sent out evacuation plans to all American Citizens who registered with the Embassy here.

People aren't freaking out about it, but many are staying cautious.
