I borrow dvds from the public library and the movie studios don't make a cent from this (except from the original sale of the dvd). Not that much different from file sharing.

The studios are greedy. They make their money when their films are in the cinemas. Whatever they make in dvd sales is gravy. On top of that, they rip people off on dvd sales. They charge like $25 for a new release. Manufacturing cost is maybe 50 cents. Who's the real thief? Funny that dvd profit margins never make the news as a topic. I wonder why.

Don't be silly. The movie studios are free to charge what ever they please.

However, I don't support their wish to have their business model protected by the govt. They have a right to prosecute people who steal their intellectual property, but I think it would be more beneficial for them to look at their own systems and business model, rather than acting belligerently towards their customers.

I wonder how many of the 5000 even watched the movie. What's the policy on downloading a movie and not watching it?

Of course that is still stealing, but it high lights the absurdity of prsecuting these people.

Net flix doesn't work in Korea.

I love how the argument against stealing is "stealing is wrong" and not a legitimate argument about how it's wrong. Thats like "speeding is wrong". Everything is circumstantial.

Also, downloading movies is not stealing, sorry.

This is a new tactic, clearly meant to try to earn back the billions wasted on lawsuits.

Pay up or get sued...I'd fight it. There are so many angles to fight back on this stuff, it takes more time than anything else.

The plaintiff has to prove not only that you connected and uploaded (downloading is gray area if you can prove you own a copy), they also have to prove you completed the sharing of an entire file.

They probably figured out the average cost per case and said "we tell then to settle for a little bit more than the average cost, and we are fighting them and making a profit doing it".

This is the scummiest shit I have EVER seen.

You're right about price. The consumer has to be wise. Dvds are no different from the $40 baseball caps that are made in China for $1.

Or the plastic adapter piece I bought in Korea for 500 won (.50 cents) to change my North American electrical plug to a Korean one. This piece sells for $7.00 in Canada ($8 with tax). Don't you love capitalism: Exploit the poor in 3 rd world countries and rob the middle class in industrialized countries.

BTW, in Canada, representatives from the movie studios do their own policing of pirate dvd sales (not the police). They go to the sellers and seize the product.
