I got home after stopping off at Homeplus to pick up some frozen seafood mandoo and the entire stock of whole wheat pasta (a friend tipped me off that after nearly 4 months of being out, they had it stocked again). I'd just put on the water to steam them when the woman who works in the building management office rang my doorbell. She explained that I needed to join her in the office.

Apparently, the apartments are owned by different people, and the owner of mine didn't want to file some paperwork necessary for insurance, and I'm not allowed to live in an apartment without that insurance per the board of education. How lovely of the landlord.

So now I've got to move to another floor and lose my southern exposure. Mind you, while at Homeplus I picked up some pretty pots for the the new herbs I was planning on adding to my garden. Not to mention the fact that I won't have as toasty a place come winter. JOY!

Ugh. 10 days to box everything up and give it a decent clean. The office lady told me I could take boxes from the back, where people put their recycling--about 3 meters from the garbage. No thank you!

Just venting here. My mandoo is yummy, though. Sighs... Rolling Eyes

Bummer, sorry to hear about that... In situations like this, I think they should really give at least 15 - 30 days notice. That said, I think you're lucky you got 10. A couple of people I knew at my old hogwan were informed just 2 days before they needed to move. It was a Friday, and one of the Korean office workers told them they needed to be out by the end of Sunday. So long, weekend...

Enjoy the mandu.

Don't clean it NYCGirl. (1) You don't have to, it's not expected and you will be not be billed for cleaning if you don't do it. (2) Some people regard it as bad luck (you'll clean the luck out of the apartment or some such nonsense..)

10 days is massive. You're very lucky. I worked with a girl who was told by the boss that she was fired, effective the end of that day. She had to move out the same day. She wasn't allowed to finish early on her final day either.. she had from 7:30pm until the morning to move out with no chance of finding somewhere else that day. She was Korean so she did it.

When I arrived and was aghast at the mess I saw in my officetel, I bitched about the tenant not cleaning to my co-teacher. She answered some steamy pile of BS that Koreans don't clean the apartment when they move out because of the good luck thing - hah! The previous tenant wasn't Korean tho but when in Rome....

Yeah.. if you know a westerner is moving in, it'd be nice to clean up for them. If Koreans are moving in they'll be expecting to clean, and may already have made arrangements for cleaners; most moving companies will do a bit of a clean for example.

Korean landlords won't deduct cleaning fees from your deposit if you leave it messy. (And it WILL be messy if you have a moving company in, the no-shoes thing goes out the window then.)

I was setting the scene. Usually when people tell a story for the sake of telling a story, they use this thing called background. I was f-ing hungry and this "meeting" took well over an hour and a half.

I know 10 days is a lot of notice in the ROK. I'm just unnecessarily stressed and wanted to vent.

NYCgal- the new place might be great, don't give up hope yet.
As for notice- I personally got told at three PM that the movers would be at my house at 4 but the workday finished at 5, and no, I wasn't allowed to leave early that day to deal with it. I got home, and the movers were carrying my dirty laundry down the stairs! Mad

WOW Peppermint! That's nuts!

The apartment is exactly the same as my current one, albeit 5 floors up and lacking southern exposure. They tried to sell me the idea with "It'll be cooler in summer," but I have AC, so it never affected me. What stinks is that it'll be so much colder in the winter.

I know it's not the biggest problem in the world, or even a moderate one at that. I'm just not happy with the realtor wanting to bring people to mine while I'm at work. I'm going to have my coteacher explain to her that she's going to have to set up showings in the evening, when I'm home.

Imagine the faces when they see my 2 pet rats!

I knew they were looking for an apartment for me, but I thought I'd have til the end of the month. There'd been a bit of a mix up when I started, and I was temporarily sharing a two bedroom apartment with a male teacher at another school in the city. I guess one of the parents got wind and thought we were shacking up. Rolling Eyes

I hope you have an elevator, also I'm not sure why it would be colder in the winter.

The landlord will show it to people whenever she feels like, even if she "agrees" to only show it when you're there. I wouldn't agree to letting people look at my place, and they tried to go in anyway. I know, because they complained about me changing the lock (actually adding one), when they shouldn't have even known about that. Mad

We do have elevators, and my school's arranged to have movers help me transport the heavy items. The landlord asked to borrow my key, which I said no to. My coteacher is going to call and let them know what times they can go in, but I'll be locking up my computer and jewelry for the next 10 days. It looks like I'm going to start my spring cleaning today. Saturday'll be a LOAD of fun!

My second year I got notice the day after Christmas at 9 am that I had to move at 2 pm (long story that involved the local school board pocketing housing allowance).

Your situation is an inconvenience, but 10 days isn't too bad.
