I think Yo-ja topped it with his Dokdo suggestion.

Correct.
I have read this a couple of times, once online and once in a history book. Apparently it was formerly land that was seasonally inundated by the Han river, whence all that was left above water was a small island. Thus, it was useless land nobody wanted.

*"seom" translates as "islet" to me, island (and province) is 'do".

Ori and Jeongja. Although you realize those aren't the actual meanings right?

Strangely, it's never occurred to me that the subway names might actually MEAN something.

Edit: I mean, are these "traditional" words or place names that don't make sense in modern Korean?

Some station names are very old "traditional" words that are not normally used to mean something in everyday Korean. These names have in effect become "just place names." With other names, the words are still a part of modern vernacular such that most locals can recognize the word as a certain meaning. (eg. the word Gangbyeon is readily recognized as "river shore" by all literate Koreans)
