I realize this is a common question, and in past jobs I've been used to going in an hour early or so, staying a bit afterwards, and also doing extra work when we had to do student evaluations, team meetings, etc.

However in my current job the situation is different. I'm teaching at least 24 hours/week, and also being required to stay for 4-5 hours each day for extra help/preparation. And come in on Saturdays. Total time spent at the office is 50-60 hours/week. None of this counts as overtime.

My only question: are there any relevant labor laws about overtime? Obviously I would get fired if I brought this up, I'm just curious.

If you're at a public school, tell them no. My current school tried to get me to come in an hour early everyday, they said I should respect the culture. I told them no, my contract comes first. End of argument Razz

my shrew of a coteacher tried to get me to come in on Saturdays the Korean teacher did at my PS last year...she was such a biotch I put my foot down and referenced the contract....


when she pulled the ol' "respect the culture" thing, I flipped it on her, and said,"Respect MY culture- the culture of capitalism and santicty of contracts! God gave us the first contract in the Bible- the 10 commandments!!!" Twisted Evil

then I said a prayer to Donald Trump... either way, I never ended up working Saturdays.

Firstly, PS or hagwon?

Secondly, check your contract. If it says no Saturdays then don't come in Saturdays. If it says 9-5 then you don't work before or after that. Quite simple, really.

But we must show compassion to the trolls. If we don't feed them, who will? They will have to rely on their meds, and these sometimes don't work (as they have habituated to them). And they sometimes forget to take them - and then there's no fun in their sad, silly little lives. So when we feed trolls , we are actually helping them, and making merit for ourselves.
