I was thinking of taking my EPIK summer holiday and staying in Korea this year. Experience tells me that it rains through June and into July. August is usually hot and sunny. Which is good for cruising around in. I was going to go on vacation in August. I asked a teacher; but we were speaking Korean; and he said it might be July and August. (I might have misunderstood.) That really sucks and I hope not. What have you heard from your co-teachers? Lets see if we can figure this out and once we all know, can plan our summers around good weather or bad weather. |

I heard that the hot stuff may come early this year, with August being wet and stormy. Stormy means more the further South you go in the country.
It may all change next month and the forecasters may change there minds. |

According to the front page of the Chosun, Monsoon season starts on the 17th in Jeju and should be everywhere by the 19th.

Monsoon Starts Thursday
This year's monsoon season will begin in Jeju on June 17, and the weather front will reach the southern part of the peninsula the following day and the entire country on June 19, the Korea Meteorological Administration predicted Monday.
Jeju and the south will see heavy rains three or four days earlier than last year, and the central part of the peninsula nine days earlier. That is two to four days earlier than the previous three-decade average.
The KMA warned of severe rain damage as downpours are expected to be heavier than usual.
"We've observed that the monsoon front moving north toward Korea has taken much more distinct shape than in previous years," KMA said. "The more distinct the shape of the monsoon front gets, the heavier the rain."
The KMA promised weather forecasts for each ward and district across the country on its homepage (www.kma.go.kr) every hour from Tuesday.

One of the EBS programs said it might be this weekend. I'm kinda glad I'm going home for the month of July. Tennessee will be hot but maybe no rain. |

Really? Wouldn't you have said it started on Friday night? I'm officially in rainy season mode now. I expect it to last 4-6 weeks (boo), then the cicadas will come out and it will be stinking hot, with less rain for the next 4-6 weeks...bring it on! This is my 3rd summer in Korea and is what I have noticed the last two. It's hardly long enough to form a reliable pattern, but apart from the long winter and short spring this year, it seems to be going to plan so far. So short answer, I would guess that August should be ok.
Oh yes, and as to Korea having four seasons, surely the rainy season is its own season, and Korea actually has 5 seasons:
Autumn
Winter
Spring
Rainy Summer
Dry(er) Summer |

I live in the central part of the country and last year thought the whole "rainy season" thing was sooo overhyped. We get more rain in an afternoon thunderstorm in Florida than the whole of what Koreans here consider monsoon season. I was expecting something like the annual deluges of India or Bangladesh. I know it flooded some in Busan, but I think if you take your trip in the central and northern parts of the country, the weather should be decent besides the heat. That being said I'm no meteorologist...maybe it will be worse this year. |
