What's the technical term for when you turn a statement into a question by negating the verb? I'm having trouble locating the topic in my grammar book.

For example:

"He doesn't like roses, does he?"

or

"Class is finished now, isn't it?"

Also, any teaching tips on this topic would be appreciated. Thanks!

1. If the auxiliary verb in the sentence is positive, the tag is negative.

You are Spanish, aren't you?

2. If the auxiliary verb in the sentence is negative, the tag is positive.

You're not Spanish, are you?

3. If there is no auxiliary verb in the sentence, we use do.

Unless you speak certain dialects of Native American English where every tag question is "i'n it?" Laughing

"He told a great story, i'n it?"

Incidentally, if anyone else is having trouble with how to teach this, I found this website really helpful:

http://www.teflteachthai.com/Tag_Questions_Made_Easy.html

Unlike the other sites I looked at, it clarified common mistakes learners have in ANSWERING tag questions, and how to clarify for them... awesome!

Have the students say:

Is Shirley not pretty?

Then coach them to say:

Yes, Shirley is pretty.
and
Yes, she is.

That was from the site, Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Teacher: Is this your book?
Student: Yes, it is.

Teacher: We can use "Isn't" to mean the same thing. (use equal sign if they can't understand)
Teacher: For example, "Isn't this your book?"
Student: Yes, it is.

Repeat with different examples, but I wouldn't say "Is this NOT ___" and expect "Yes, it is" as an answer Confused
