As a former east coaster in the US I found Seattle to be the coldest place - it's referred to as the "Seattle Chill" there. I met transplants from all over the States who didn't like it there. What's worse is the natives from there think they're god's gift to N America. Portland was a much neater place.

I too have been very disappointed by the people from Seattle that I've met. Perhaps it's the miserable weather.

It's seemingly contradictory - tons of liberal, well educated young people in a place like Seattle and yet it can be very cool and reserved in many ways. A lot of people there chalk it up to the weather and a cultural heritage from Asians and Northern Europeans. Actually, Seattle struck me then and now as being very reserved East Asian way. On a personal level, I'm not crazy about Seattle culture or a lot of things about East Asian culture.

Ha! I almost shyte when Moldy Rutabaga said how "mean'' Yorkton, Saskatchewan was!

I grew up there. Kind of town where Nelson of the Simpsons would've been a school wimp! Gerry James, legendary hockey/football star moved there & proved himself a sociopath-but in Yorkton he was a kind of "folk hero"!

How to explain it? Brutal winters? But W. Canada is chock-a-block full of brutal winters. Ethnic mix? Sure Yorkton has Ukrainians, Finns, Hungarians, Scandinavians, WASPs, etc.,...but so do all W. Can. prairie towns....

Yorkton...just a miserable bunch of 'tards!

I still love the place! Smile

Least friendly countries...I'll have a lash here:

1. Bosnia-Herzegovina - because I got shot at a lot there. And I mean a lot.
2. France - because they just seemed snotty when they learned that I wasn't your basic tourist.
3. Mexico - because (for some reason (in Chihuahua)) they didn't like my Harley-Davidson. Either too noisy or that it cost what they might make in three years. Rolling Eyes
4. England - because I'm from the United States. To them, we're still the colonies. They sometimes still get nasty about that whole thing.
5. United States - because when you're from the South, everyone else thinks you're a racist idiot. Barstards.

On the flip (and just for a change) - my friendliest countries:

1. Germany. True, their sense of humor is drier than Margaret Thatcher's knicks in the Gobi, but they are quick to buy the beer, by gads!
2. Uruguay. Chivitos! Damn right.
3. Scotland (she qualifies as a country for this post). Eilean Sgitheanach. Need I say more?
4. Thailand. Y'all know what that's about.
5. Brazil. It's like a nation of hippies - they just want peace and love.

Who said that to you? I've never heard anyone seriously speak to me saying that the US is still considered a colony.

I bet you probably got looked down upon because the US is considered by some to be low-brow and rather ignorant, and with comments like that I sometimes (against my better knowledge and nature) see why.

I was having a beer and minding my own when an English gentleman decided to hold forth about how the US was basically an offspring of the British empire and we (Americans) could do no better than to reaccept Her Majesty's reign and to come back into the fold, as it were. He repeatedly referred to the United States as "the colonies," and the fellows at the bar were pretty much in steadfast agreement. I was hard-pressed not to put my colonial size-13 up his aft parts.

England is our grandmother, no doubt. We're developed beyond that now, though. I took his discourse as sour grapes and had done with him, but the memory of that encounter remains. That's why England makes my list.

There aren't many people like that in England. You must have met what we like to call, "A complete wanker."

So that's not the general opinion in Her Majesty's realm, then?

Nope. To echo, the guy was clearly a complete wanker.

Okay - I'm not afraid to reexamine my ideas. The guy was a wanker (jackass), and so were his companions, then.

What, then, does Brittania think of her American cousin? You all might agree that there's a whole lot of something in that question.

Well, I wouldn't say there is any uniform opinion. I lived in the US and thought it was nice.

If you had to gather all British opinions on Americans, it would probably boil down to, "A bit loud."
That's not too bad.

Not bad at all, and accurate, too, if I may add my humble opinion.

I must have run into some folks on the outer rim, if you take my meaning.

I would have to say Italy. I was there 5 days and not a single person bothered to smile or say a kind word, despite my attempts to be friendly. Near the last day an ice cream vendor was pretty nice to me so I thought maybe they aren't all bad. It turned out she was from Romania, though.

I had a similar impression from people on the street, although I did stay with my friend and his family, so I got a welcome from them.

Generally Id' say Italy probably has a similar approach to foreigners as Korea does.

Yeah, underneath that coold exterior there is quite a warm friendliness. I always kinda liked Germans.

Once I had a scholarship to go to England for three months to work on my thesis, and just to say that I did research at Cambridge I spent a day in their university library. Sheesh. What a hassle to get in; letters from my department, pictures, signatures. The aged secretary didn't want to let me in and said, "Canada? I didn't know we admitted non-students from the colonies." I bit my lip. "Yes, that country that helped save your warm-beer drinking behinds in World War II." But this was not typical of the English I met.

I haven't been there, but I have so many German friends. They are always a little reserved but very kind.

I get lost in a revolving door, but I found Seattle to have one of the most confusing road plans I have ever seen. I basically gave up and drove around randomly for an hour or so until I found the main freeway north. If there's nothing else that would make people irritable..
