supposedly the contracts are being sent out this week, but for SMOE it will be a little later due to the deadline was extended.

I wonder why the deadline was extended. I mean, if you run a show that's first-come first-served and you fill your programme with applicants, surely you're good to go. No? |

It seems like everyone who hasn't got the official "congratulations" email is SOL by now.
By the way, how much money are you guys saving up for that first month? |

Does anyone know where to get the proof of residency form for the US? I would like to avoid being double taxed. |

If you're from the U.S., you wont be double taxed. A certain amount of foreign income (more than we'll make! $91,500 currently I believe, it changes every year but is always high) is exempt from U.S. taxes, specifically to avoid double taxation.
To my knowledge, you can avoid paying taxes altogether (as an American) if it is your first time in Korea, for two years. You just need to get a resident certificate by filing the form 8802 with the IRS. I haven't done it... seems confusing.

Just heard from my recruiter. Apparently my papers have yet to be sent out because posts are filling up. I have been placed on a WAIT LIST. My recruiter wanted to reconfirm that I'm available to work anywhere, which I am. They also wanted to know if I could start on a later date, Sep 26, Oct 26 or Nov 26. Also yes.
I imagine there will be more wait list notifications happening now.
I only ever had a provisional acceptance from EPIK. I never got the Congratulations e-mail or anything like that, only notification from my recruiter that I passed my interview, which I took on June 6.
Good luck to us all. |
Hey Kemek,
I have been notified that I am to be wait listed as well. Are those dates that you have listed ones that wait listed folk such as ourselves typically wind up with jobs?
@ Everyone, does anyone have experiences being wait listed for EPIK? What are the chances of being accepted? Wait it out or go private?
Any information about this wait list process would be greatly appreciated |

Got a placement e-mail today. Also they've changed their words from 'contracts later this week' to 'contracts starting next week' over the past couple days. |

Haha. When I got mine, it said late June!
Realistically, I am expecting them to start sending them NEXT week (June 14th+). Just a guess, though. That gives us one month to prep! |

Ah. Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll be able to understand it a little better or be able to find clear instructions on how to fill it out...or have someone help me. *just looked at it* *sigh* No taxes would be nice. <3 |

oh poo. Really really worrying now :s Still havent heard much either way since I was asked if I'd accept a position in a province, no official email confirmation from Epik either. I dont think I could bear to be put on a wait list, was put on the Jet one last yr to no avail. I just reckon this process has been so lengthy and quite expensive for everyone that VERY few ppl will drop out - I know it would take something pretty extreme to make me stay here! I just dont really understand thou. If Epik run on a first come first served basis I'm not sure how I'm in this position. My recruiter initially approached me back in January and would support me with my application for Fall 2010. January!!
Does anyone know if it comes to applying to private schools etc will we have to go through the whole apostille / disclosure process again? Cuz to send everything off to Epik for them not to accept is pretty crappy, as with everyone else I know the cost of gathering my documents came to over 100 so can't really be affording to do this with loads of different ppl you know. Also how does one go about applyong to public school directly? Would much prefer the public school route, just in terms of working hrs etc. anyways sorry to be so negative!! I'm just worrying about this whole thing as I'm sure a lot of you are too... |

If you've been offered a contract and are definitely going to Korea, if you are a US resident I would definitely order my IRS Certificate of Residency.
It's just much easier to arrive with it in Korea than it is to fill out the paperwork, send it back to the US and then wait for the IRS to process it (takes about 4 weeks). I know its cutting it close but apply for it NOW! |

I emailed my recruiter today to ask what on Earth is going on. I don't understand Korea's notion of first-come, first-served. SMOE is apparently delaying sending out more confirmations. I even heard they may have re-opened their application process. Of course, I don't know that for sure. I don't know anything for sure. No one's telling us anything.
I'd rather be told tomorrow that SMOE were dropping my application than go through another fortnight of utter silence from them. It's about 40 days until orientation begins and, despite passing the phone interview, EPIK document check and presumably SMOE document check (for who truly can know for sure?), I'm still without a confirmation email or date for contract and NOA mailing... to say nothing of actually having a contract!
It must be nice to be able to behave so astonishingly unprofessionally and keep your job. |

LeePDX, I wish I knew. My recruiter said I could possibly be contracted to start on one of those dates. She also said EPIK hopes to have all contracts out by the end of July, so I'm assuming that would be for the late starts too. But I also assumed that I had a job last month and now I actually don't, so who knows?
I'm so bummed and beaten down by this whole process. I don't want to get yet another CRC, pay to have it apostilled, etc just so I can start applying to private schools. I have a friend in Taiwan, maybe I'll just go there.

well ive said it once and il say it again, at least we have safety in numbers that we're all kinda freaking out, it just REALLY bothers me that's we're all completely at their mercy 'oh you may have a job / there may be a position for you' and that epik really do have us all by our nether regions. At least with Jet it was pretty standard year to year...by a certain month you'd know about interview, then whether u were accepted or not so you could actually PLAN this life changing event of moving to live in another country for x amount of years as opposed to just being told when it suits them. I scanned through the spring epik thread and sum guy was told 1 WEEK before orientation he was going. Obv I know this is better than nothing but 1 week?! to sort a visa, flight etc? it's just a total shambolic joke.
Someone mentioned before or maybe on the facebook how its getting tiresome fobbing off worried friends and family members that the whole things a scam and that we're being taken for a ride cuz I know its not but the way their dealing with it certainly suggests otherwise!! Like i know my recruiter knows no more than me and they've been as good as they can, it's still just massively frustrating.
ONE thing I feel is in our favour thou. Epik are due to take on HUNDREDS of people and yes there have been quite a few ppl saying on here they got their confirmation email etc but not hundreds. Whether they just cant be arsed posting or arent really following the online saga, there's still ALOT of ppl not accounted for so maybe we're just one of the ones they haven't got to yet? I really bloody hope so as i dont really know what I'll do if this doesnt come thru!! |
