Hi, I was wondering if anyone could suggest some phonic based games for kindergarten. Particularly I am wondering what would be a good game for kids who are just beginning to start learning english.

If you can find a pair of plastic kiddie bonk hammers (try Young Art), you can make a very simple phonics game using letters of the alphabet.

Set two cards on the floor, for example flash cards for the letters "R" and "L". Make a list of words that begin with one of these two letters and get two of the tots to bonk the one that they hear.

Pretty good game for the lower levels, gets them active and they really get excited. Keep it to 5 mins per game though.

get yourself a copy of David Pauls Teaching English to Children In Asia. Lots of good games and advice in there. Also it talks about how to teach phonics.

I second that. The book that ulsanchris just mentioned has definitely made me a better teacher. I would recommend it to anyone teaching children here. You can find it at Bandi and Linus (sic) at COEX mall.

I second easy e's bonk hammers...they even come in handy with the older kids and quiz games (as a buzzer)....i bought 5 at Lotte Mart... 2,000 a piece.

Also a fun game is to buy fly swatters....and have them hit the sounds. Line them up in teams, give the first on a fly swatter, say the phonics sound and watch them run and hit....so cute.

Bingo is always good! Make up your own boards with the phonics that you taught that week (and previous weeks) and say the SOUNDS.

"Swat" is also good. All you need is 2 flyswatters. Write 5 or 6 phonics letter or pairs (or whatever) on the board. Students come to the board in pairs (2 teams). The first one to swat what you say gets the point.

Candy is a good prize, but I like "the team that wins gets to leave first!"
