Does anyone have a dish, specifically sky life? If so, do you get a a lot of channels in English? Are the movie channels like TCM or MGM and the like dubbed or do they have Korean subtitles. In other words, I am looking for more english language programming than my current cable package provides. Any advice, thanks |

I have had it for about 3 months and it really sucks. Save yourself some trouble and don't bother getting it. The English channels are few and the programming is crappy. I am telling you DO NOT GET IT. |

I agree - only in SK - can you PAY MORE for LESS when ti comes to entertainment. SKY LIFE might be good if you're moving into a small city or have a crappy cable system that offers 30 home shopping channels and no English news outlets, but here i the smackdown:
You either buy the equipment (about $200 US and it's yours for life) and pay 30 thousand won a month for all fo the movie channels, sports channels and Catch On and Catch ON plus, or yuo pay a higher monthly rate and "rent" the equipment.
You get less than 100 channels, for sure. 90% of them are available on cable (usually 6 won a month).
The picture and sound quality is really good with Sky Life, and you get pay per view movie capabilities (useless, really).
The channels Skylife doesn't get that cable offers are: DCN/Cinexus (movies from around the world and Japanese tv dramas), and a handful of other small movie channels. It doesn't get MTV or MNET. If you want local programming, well I can only speak for Ulsan, but MBC and one other major, local network are not available, though their cable channels are.
Only: Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and STAR SPORTS seem to be exclusive, English-language offerings.
Other exclusives are Channel V Korea and KMTV (or is it MNET? I don't remember because I barely watch those stations).
It's a SCAM and all involved should be be hung and left for dead.
Stick with cable.
The only real plus would be investing in a parabolic antennae and getting kickarse Japanese offerings.
SKYLIFE was the WORST investment I've ever made in my life. I am NOT exagerating.
It's a SCAM unless you live way out in the middle of nowhere, like Buddy Bradley!
Oh - Movie Channels - it has like two lame exclusive movie channels plus the laughably bad MGM and MGM plus.
STICK with cable, save your money and avoid the headaches.
Anybody want to buy the skylife set-up? Joe's gonna switch to cable.

Why not get both satellite and cable?
You can buy switcher boxes so you just walk to the TV and choose what you want to watch that day.
Guess it depends how much you like TV...
Personally I'd rather invest in a phat inet connection and grab what I want off the net. |

If you have cable now, it's doubtful that SkyLife will offer you significantly more than you are getting now, if it is indeed any more at all. I got Skylife because I couldn't get cable in my apartment. There are quite a few movie channels, but I only bother to check one or two of them as most of them are crap. Other than that, it's basically just for CNN and the sports channels. Nothing you can't get on cable, really. |

Follow up question. Is the ESPN they offer on Skylife real ESPN or is it some asianized version that shows a bunch of soccer and ping pong. I'm looking for a way to catch the World Cup of Hockey in August which will be carried on ESPN but Skylife's website calls it MBC ESPN or something like that, suggesting it's something different. Any help appreciated, thanx in advance. |

It's not the Asian ESPN (VERY GOOD IMO), but it's MBC ESPN (or some local netwrok/ESPN - and it sucks. Typical Korean prime time "game" shows with occaisonal Korean pro wrestling{not bad} and old school boxing reruns late at night {also not bad}).
If you're from the U. S. - then the Korean "game" shows are basically "Battle of the Network Stars" crap.
Unless your area (or the area you're moving into) has poor cable and you need your CNN that they're not carrying (most areas have CNN and/or BBC World News) or Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon - then there's absolutely no reason to get Sky Life.
It's the biggest scam Joe's come across in quite some time.

Are you stating Sky Life is a scam due to the lack of English channels? If that is your reasoning, isn't Sky Life mainly for Koreans? Or do you dislike the satellite service due to the price? If it's price related to number of channels (not just English), does Sky Life offer more channels? Or is the quality just better (or worse) than cable?
Cheers. |

IT has NOTHING to do with English and EVERYTHING to do with channels offered and service coupled with the price.
That's been made ABUNDANTLY clear on my side. The English channel comments are directed to the original post - where they asked if there were more sources for English programming.
SKYLIFE just sucks.
