Once again, another who's is repeating 'because they can'.
Yes, I know its in the contract.
Yes, I signed it.
Yes, I do it because I have to.
No, I dont complain to CT, VP, P about it.
But it doesnt change the fact that there is no LOGICAL reason for it to happen. |

Exactly. We do it. We should be able to argue how silly and illogical it is with other like-minded people without being called unprofessional by apologists. Do we complain to the management? Probably not, for the most part, as we knowingly signed our contracts. It's easy enough to come in a read or play online. I downloaded dozens of books for my ipad, and also have a stack of teaching books to fill the time. It doesn't negate the fact that some of the business practices that a majority of us are subject to are ridiculous. Productivity isn't valued in this culture. Looking busy seems to be. |

Do you ever feel like you're taking crazy pills around here Oculis?
All I am saying is....what would it hurt for the public school system to give teachers more time off when they have completed all of their work?
All that would happen is that employee retention would increase and teachers would be rejuvenated at the start of the new term.
Nobody is saying that NETs have the right to just disregard their boss and walk out of the school....we're just saying that it is a pointless and backwards practice. |

To me half the problem is that they can't provide a reasonable schedule...one that outlines the days you do have class, the days that you don't, the days that you have camp, the days that you don't, the days that there is some test that the kids will be taking and not coming to your class, and so on.
...................
|
Yeah, I really agree with this - yesterday half of my camp classes were canceled because of health checkups. No warning or notice of the schedule change. On one hand it was easy - they said I could go home early but in other ways it just goes to the heart of the communication and planning problems...... |

No, I just palm the pills when they are handed out and trash them later, but it seems many people here happily swallow them and then ask for more. |

That's really not the issue here. What's unprofessional is each of the stunts the OP pulled before, during, and after the camp started. He obviously knew full well that he would be required to be at the school. That's why he fished around "asking a number of other teachers" their schedule. Korean teachers' schedules have absolutely no bearing on the NET's schedule. And, as another poster mentioned, the OP already knew that simple fact. He tried to sneak out and got upset that he got caught. Too bad.

NYC_Gal,
Like I said, that was my 45 second list -- if I had a workday or a workweek, you can bet I would find plenty to do without having to be told what I should be doing...however, you did address that you have done all of the things on my list, for which I must tip my hat to you -- while YOU may indeed do those things, many "teachers" here in Korea do not.
You do get a bit personal when you suggest that I am "inefficient" in my work -- I might retort that you could just be complacent in your own. If good enough is good enough for you and the school, I suppose that is just fine. I prefer the things I do to be better than they were before -- perhaps an impossible task, to always improve, but it is how I roll. I don't do it for the school or my bosses, though they do benefit from it -- I do it for myself and my students.
However, as I said, if you are already doing at least those things I mentioned, then kudos to you, NYC_Gal. |

I was being snarky. No worries. There is far more that I do without being asked by my school. I was just checking off your list.
Deskwarming is lame, though. I could just as easily tweak my lessons at home in glorious air conditioning, a mere 10 minute bike ride from work. I'd even promise to stay in the neighborhood, in case they needed me.
Ah well... Bring on the hours an hours of reading |

I do agree with your sentiments in general. I'm well regarded by my school and students recently gave me really high marks in a survey. I've "eaten" a few decisions that have left me with a bad taste - again, almost entirely due to poor planning &/or communication. %100 avoidable. I haven't done anything unprofessional in response yet I see no reason why making negative remarks about the experience gets the knee jerk labeling it sometimes does here.
People's descriptions are probably incomplete by the nature of posting in in forums like Dave's. I guess we'll read something of our own experience into what we see here - I find it completely believable that people have landed "in trouble" over bad communication and then "react" in ways that aren't always constructive. Frankly, it looks like one of the curses of working in Korea. |

THANK YOU. People here are arguing different things.
No one here thinks that deskwarming is logical or practical. I have yet to see anyone here support deskwarming.
Also, the OP did some crazy stunts because he doesnt agree with the concept of deskwarming. Disagreeing with your employer or contract does not give you the right to not adhere to rules.
No, it wouldnt hurt the schools to give us more vacation time |

I don't get it. There's no school, but you have to go in.
That's retarded. |
You just graduated and never held a job before?
Anyone working even summer jobs know, you come in and do the hours you are paid to work, whether there is work or not.
You are not the Bossman, you do not freely interpret how your contractual time is being spent. |
No, I graduated in1993. Had many jobs. When the company closed and there was no business to do, like around Christmas because it was useless for us to come in, I didn't have to go to work and it wasn't counted as me taking a holiday. So, yes, I think it's retarded to make employees come in for no reason.
Now, if it's essential for the employee to be there, thems the breaks. Is it essential in this case? No. So something has to be changed with EPIK or whatever. Did the OP have to go in according to the contract? Yes, I think so, but it's stupid, really. At the same time, I don't have much sympathy for him.
Don't get on my back.
I totaly believe that the OP signed a contract and therefore knew what he was getting into. Therefore, too bad, so sad.

I'm only arguing because some people (see below) have said that many of us are unprofessional. I've only got two friends here who fit that description (but I don't work with them, so they're loads of fun!). Everyone else is hard working and goes above and beyond. Unfortunately, it's the luck of the draw when it comes to whether or not we get to stay home, leave early (at least), or have to stay until 4:40.

Didn't read the whole thread other than the OP
Damn dude. I read my contract. Wasn't surprised when they told me I had to sit on my butt for an extra five days before taking my real holiday. Jeez- you got busted and decide to vent about your wrong-doing on Daves. Great going.
Why not bring a movie/book/game to school and kill time while having fun, instead of asking random Korean teachers what their plan is, when you need to be talking to your co-teacher |

thats true, I have not seen a single person here actually support deskwarming, Mnay of us have said that you COULD find stuff to do if you really tried. There are always ways to improve up on your owl lessons, or lok for different materials for new ones.
That being said the "because they can" is not technically the issue, for many following the contract is the issue. You have 21 vacation days, its not "21 vacation days, you know unless we like really think you are bored, so like maybe we will let you go home"
So the "because they can" is a complete and total misnomer in many cases ( not in others of course) |
