For those of you who teach in hagwons, were you refused enrollment in the National Health Plan and/or the National Pension Scheme? Did you inquire about enrolling in one or both programs, but the hagwon boss refused to enroll you? |

This is a direct quote from one of them "We could enroll you...but then then we'd have to fire you." Which made me wonder why they'd bother enrolling me first. I ended up quitting that job which resulted in threats of physical harm and that favorite old chestnut of Korean hakwon bosses everywhere "You'll never work in Korea again!"
Only that was said to me by a FOREIGN recruiter.
Still here more than five years later. |

In one of my early hogwon experiences, i was told "yes we are sorting that out for you right now" everytime i followed up on the health insurance issue. Of course, after a few weeks i realised they were just fobbing me off and saving face by not saying "no." They had no intention of giving me health insurance or pension.
So i had a decision to make if it was worth putting up a fight. I chose to not fight because i already had a 1 year backpackers insurance (including emergency medical) taken out before i came to korea. It still left a bad taste in my mouth of Korean culture. Wankers! |

My first year: nata, zero, nothing, ziltch
I talked to a teacher who was working there a few months ago, as an employee, on a E2, not an independent contractor, that said he and the other foreigner were not enrolled in the NHI or Pension. The boss basically said he was not going to enroll them. |

The more important question is this:
For those of you who are in a contract in a hogwan this year (previous years do not count, since there have been big changes over the last few years), have been there over 6 months (long enough to do all the paperwork and verify enrollment), have a contract that specifically calls for you to receive pension, and health insurance, and your contract has an appropriate tax rate (not 3.3% or 3.5% which is for independent contractors, but according to the NTS site, which for most teachers is 1.6% to 2.5% or so) - (thus ruling out independent contractor and 5 employee rule schools) ... has your boss refused to enroll you in the national pension or national health insurance.
The answer will be that there are very few such schools - only 1% to 2%.
Which is why I keep repeating this.
Get a good contract. Do not listen to the posters that tell you the contract doesn't matter because these things are legally required.
IF you get a good contract you will get your pension and health insurance 98% of the time. |

The date I registered on this site is not the day I arrived in Korea, nor the day our school opened its doors.
My wife is a member of the Hogwon Association, and as we are co-owners of our school, we both attend a small annual meeting, I as her guest and co-owner. She typically goes to several of the small meetings annually. |

It's obvious that you don't know what you are talking about. Many who have pension written into their contract are often never signed into pension, and are then denied pension once the issue is brought up to the director. Definitely more than 1% to 2%.
If you aren't aware of this, you shouldn't present yourself as an expert on this topic. |

hehe, you're kidding, you're joking, you must be trolling, right?
I've just scanned through your posts on E2 pension, independent contactor, etc.
I haven't seen one piece of evidence that even vaguely backs up what you are claiming.
1%-2%, come on! I could claim 10%, 20%, 25%, or anything that I want if I used your reasoning. There's nothing that ties the numbers to your claim.
OK, come on, let's see something that backs up your claims.
Yea, I've noticed what you've done with the other posters. You cherry picked their posts and negated anything relevant. Yea, I know, you will do it with this post also.
Again, let's see something concrete that even remotely backs up your claim. |
