I've only been in Korea six weeks (in a small town). I plan to travel soon and would like a pension or hostel or other cheap place to spend one night in Gwangju, preferably near the Gwangju Station (train), or as near as possible.

Any recommendations appreciated. As a landmark starting point, I know the Gwangju Bus Terminal. I know how to take bus 9 to the Asian Culture Complex.

I have not yet been to the Gwangju Station (train). Although I think I will have figured out in advance how to get there, any helpful details are also welcomed.

Not really much of that in the mid-sized cities like Gwangju. There are several perfectly fine love motels near the train station, and a ton behind the bus terminal, where you'll pay 30,000 to 50,000 won per night. The motels near Chungjangno and the Culture Complex, with the exception of the Windmill, are generally older and dirtier.

There is also something new this year called Homestay Gwangju, run through the Gwangju International Center, which sets up homestays for travellers in the city.

3,000 won for an adult.

I always stay at the Rainbow Motel. It's 25,000 W per night and it's a great deal. It's a clean and nice hotel room with all the basic amenities and it's close to the windmill and the main chungjangno downtown shopping area. If you walk across the bridge away from Migliore, and turn right you can't miss it, it has what looks like fireworks exploding from the top of the building.
