So I did a search and it found 0 results when I put in Gym and " Gym Contracts"
Anyways, how does one obtain a gym membership in Korea? What do you need? Can foreigners get one?
Do I have to pay a whole year up front or can I do month to month?
I heard its a hassle *IN Seoul* to go a gym due to the travel time and walking time you might as well be pooped by the time you arrive to your destination, shower get home and you're running late for work.
Thanks |

You can do it month by month, but it's a lot more expensive. No problem joining a gym here. I'd find a gym that looks good near where you live and try it out for a month. If you like--and that means it isn't overcrowded or the equipment is crap or it's too damn hot or the place is full of scowling weirdos--then get a longer membership.
There are so many gyms in Seoul that you can always find one near where you live--but it might not be good. |

How expensive? Whats the cost of the month to month? I heard its double what I'd pay here in USA. |

Within a 15 minute walk of my house there are 6 gyms. The quality of them vary as do the prices. They range in price from 40,000 a month to 100,000 a month. Prices of gyms vary greatly according to location. I have friends who pay 20,000 a month and others who pay 80,000.
Definitely I have never seen another country with so many gyms. |

I buy 3 month blocks at my gym for 80,000 (or a tad more if I use my card instead of cash). I'm in Incheon, so Seoul would probably be a bit more. |

The gym I go to has 3 month memberships for 240 000 so 80 000 a month, but once you renew they give you an extra month for free. They didn't tell me this at first so I kept renewing after every 3 months. After doing this three times, my friend, who I actually invited to join the gym informed me of the policy that you get an extra month free for resigning. I wasn't happy at all of course as they were basically stealing a whole three month membership from me. Now they give me my discount but I have a hard time being friendly there knowing they all looked me in the face and stole my money. In short, when you sign up, inquire yourself or have a friend who speaks Korean see if there are any special discounts that can lower the price. |

You get a free month when you re-sign on a three month membership? That's ridiculous. I can understand such a policy when you re-sign after a year, but after 3 months? That's taking the piss. Bad business policy or desperation? |

They have to make up for the high price. I pay 80,000 for 3 months, not one. I think a month free at 80,000 a month is perfectly reasonable. |

I still think it's a ridiculous way of hiding the fact that you're really charging 60,000 Won a month--unless it's a one time discount. Poor business plan. Feels cheap and deceptive--especially when it lacks transparency. Most Korean gyms I've gone to--probably around a dozen in my quest to find a decent one--give discounts to longer term members. I'd really like to know what kind of offers they give to longer term members at this gym--a free year?
And 80,000 in Seoul isn't particularly expensive. If it's a half decent gym. There's a gym near my apartment that asks for 120,000 a month, 660,000 for six months, and a cool million for a year. But it's quite magnificent. I'm tempted to join for a month just to try it out. I'm not crazy about the little uniforms they ask all members to wear though. |
