So, I was in need of a cheap gaming system and almost considering getting one down at Techno-Mart in Gangbyeon.

I was letting the guys know that I wanted this at the very minimum:
Pentium 4 2.4GHz or better
1 GB RAM
Co128 MB Video RAM
DirectX 9.0 or later

Nothing too fancy, and his estimate was down to about 450.000, which I found a little worse than stopping at an Emart which offered similar specs (better cause those requirements are from 5 years ago for a game I still play).

Any idea where I can go to get a cheap system built from someone honest. I'd rather pay a bit more for something reliable, than complete junk (which happened when I bought a system from craiglist).

Any help would be appreciated. Also, not looking to break the bank - the game (Dark Age of Camelot) is a relatively old game and I just really need the PC power since my laptop is not cutting it.

Thanks

The guys at yongsan can do it, but you need to be able to haggle and you need to know the value of what you want before you go in.

Also, you are going to be paying more for the parts you want because they are super old and really will not work with newer motherboards that most vendors carry and buy.

Under 700 should get you:

intell core i5
4 gigs of ram
decent older gfx card
64bit OS

You were quoted 450,000 for that? Shocked Man, that stuff is years and years old. That chip came out in 2002! 1GB RAM!! 128MB VRAM!! hahaha......stay far far away from whoever quoted you that....he's either ripping you off or living in 2002....or both.

Just go to Technomart or Sunin-plaza at Yongsan and get an off the peg system. Not including a monitor, 450,000 should get you something recent and decent. But if you're a gamer you may want to spend more on graphics card and monitor.

Did I miss something here or is this an old post/thread that was resurrected from somewhere?

P4's with those specs (or a bit better) can be had for about 50-70k won over at seon-in plaza.

250k won will get you into a NEW entry level dual core machine with a 256mb video card, 320gb HDD, DVD burner and 2gb of ram.

450k will get you into a mid range system.

J-tech at the seon-in plaza (the place with the gigabyte sign on the side of it - to the right of the big blue building) across the tracks from Yongsan station is a good place to look but there are many others over there as well.

Saw a sign advertising i5 for 400,000 at the Electronics Market at Nambu Bus Terminal.

I know its been said. But a system with those specs is worth maybe 100,000 at most. Please do not pay anyone 400,000 for this.. That guy is taking you to town, hard.

I bought my wife a low end dual core last year with 2GB of ram so she could surf the internet and watch movies and it was 250,000 total.

At some point, old stuff appreciates in value because it's just impossible to get.

... but not THAT much! Smile

I'd imagine there would be tons of Pentium 3 and 4 era parts lying around in Korea considering that was the time of the PC Bang boom.

There must have been literally tens of thousands of obsolete P3 and P4 PC's lurking somewhere in Korea around 2003-2004 as the PC bangs upgraded.

In Korea:

New hardware: incredibly expensive (50% higher than the same stuff in the US)
Old hardware: arguably the cheapest in the world

I'd bet a perfectly well working P4 system is thrown into the trash pile every minute in this country. Think of all those PC bangs, and the fact that 9/10 of homes run a PC or two.

Alright, thanks for the replies. I'm sure I'm able to find something with those low specs. I had a computer I got from someone and it was working well except the parts he used caused the machine to crash. People have listed several places to buy this system, but who is someone that is reliable?

The problem is that those parts are so out of date its more trouble and more expensive building your super low end system than just getting a modern one.

Walk into a computer shop, go to Yongsan, or Technomart and say you want a dual core CPU with 2 gb of ram and decent video card. Tell them you have 300,000w total. Ask more than one place, compare specs and prices.

Usually for an idea of your video card requirement they will ask you what game you play most often. Tell them WoW or starcraft, something they know.

Should be easy.
