|
|
I have one week left until my contract ends and I'm still waiting to hear a response from several interviews. I've been offered one job but there is something fishy about it.
The pay is great. I will be teaching older students - high school and middle school, I get a two bedroom apartment all to myself, normal working hours, standard amount of vacation and holidays, I've been told that the school is stable and not in financial trouble.
Here is the catch and makes me wonder if I should work for this school. The recruiter sets up a phone interview with the school. The school calls me and tells me that they don't have my resume, so I must tell them about myself. Two minutes and thirty seconds into the phone interview the call is dropped. I get a call from the recruiter ten minutes later and he tells me the school wants to hire me. Does this seem wrong to you? Like they are really desperate?
The school and recruiter have been bugging to give them my decision. I have a week left to choose a school. Should I wait for more responses, or just accept this school? I've been offered a lot of good schools from recruiters, but the only one I've got a definite yes from seems a little bizarre. What would you do in this situation? |

Are there any foreign teachers there already that you can talk to? I personally wouldn't take a job before doing that anyway.
They should be able to allay or confirm any fears you have. |

Are you working in Korea? Is the new job in Korea?
If so, why not visit the school before you decide? |

This is also a good idea. As long as it's not ridiculously far from your current school, you should ask if you can visit your new school and/or apartment. If they refuse, they are hiding something. |

The school only has one foreign teacher and it is too far to travel to. I'm not sure if the foreign teacher is currently employed. |

I'm in the same situation as you. I have one week left on my contract too, and have been frantically going to many, many interviews.
I did get an offer from this one school that was just awful. They tried to make me sign a 'fake' contract. As in I refused to sign it but they told me it didn't count because this wasn't the real contract anyway... :/ Factoring in that and other weird things about the school I decided to say no to them.
Don't let your desperation for a job blind you from the obvious facts. You have to stay at that school for a year, and if you are having any doubts then I wouldn't go for it. If you can't check out the school then you have no real way of knowing just what they are like.
I would rather take a vacay in England for a while and take the position I've been offered for that starts in October.
More expensive yes, but far less stressful in the long run. |

You could see if you can extend your stay another 30 days and find temporary housing (like a love motel) and that would buy you some time to get a better offer.
If you smell something fishy, then follow your instinct. |

Its always the worst outfits that are desperate for workers because they don't know how to treat their staff properly. Korean mismanagement is legendary. Unless you work within the government framework, then expect a lot of bizarre and dodgy business practises from Koreans. That goes for all hogwons, recruiters and agencies.
But we're in an economic recession. Good jobs are scarce. You may have to settle for a less-than ideal position in the meantime. Be prepared to fight for your rights constantly though. |
