I live in the same town.

From what I understand it is not the best place to work right now.

Didn't they just fire 25 foreign teachers all at once because they dared to complain about one supervisor?

I used to work in Taegu and this university always had a bad rep. Can't say for sure now.

Master-degreed people have left this place by the flocks since a new director (Korean)/head teacher (Canadian) showed up...including myself. In return, hagwon/public school teachers that want a shot at a uni gig have been flocking in, only to find that their day-to-day lives are more stressful and demanding than their previous gigs. The days of having an MA and 20 weeks off/year are now gone. Two years ago when I started it was the probably one of the best jobs in Korea; surely the best contract outside of Seoul. Now MA's are required to work one break just as the BA people. However, the 12 hours/week for an MA is a bit of a misnomer as professors are now required to do a ton of busy work, including a 10+ page "research paper" for a campuswide publication. The poor BA people are required to do all of this work as well while they juggle 18-22 hours teaching/week. I don't even want to get into the actual restructuring of the teaching that has ruined the one time closeness professors were able to develop with the students.

I'm all for "professional development," but this busy work is a joke. They don't even consider the pursuit of an MA professional development. Unless you're desperate for a uni gig, steer clear from Yeungnam and pursue some of the smaller uni gigs around Gyeongsan where you'll be treated with respect and not considered just a disposable body. Don't get me wrong, the majority of the students are great, but a as they say, one rotten apple can easily spoil the bunch. In this case, there are two rotten apples that have ruined the entire 35+ strong MA's that were once eager to teach when they felt appreciated.

If you don't have an MA and want to be tied to a whipping post for two months off/year, go for it. I'd recommend instead finding a good public school gig that will give you more time off and really appreciate your presence.

Tried PM-ing you about this but don't have enough posts as yet. Would be grateful if you could send me a message as I have some questions about this outfit...

I haven't ever searched for old threads about Yeungnam, but I have seen some adverts from them. I'm guessing if they were deleted it was due to a conflict of interest at Dave's over advertising dollars.

If so, that sucks for the teachers who are trying to get info.

Perhaps this one's next on the chopping block?

Just to clarify which section / department we are talking about here, it is the Foreign Language Institute right?

Or does this also include the English Department?

Was a lot of this extra compulsory Seminar Presentation, Research Paper for the in-house journal, Peer Observation and Head Teacher Class Observation generated by the Canadian Head Teacher? Is s/he doing this to help them with a Master's Thesis?

Frankly, this is bizarre. I know that we are not "real" professors in Korea and that we do not have any real status in universities, but I've never heard of university teachers being subject to Chair/Dept. Head, or Peer teaching evaluations. Not two or three times an academic year - Not even once!

Micro Management at it's worst. I got into teaching at universities because of the personal and professional autonomy that it affords instructors. If I wanted to be micro managed, I'd go back to teaching at Berlitz or Nova.

Sounds like teaching at a typical Hogwan where we had to do demos and receive feedback on our teaching in order for our contracts to be renewed.

And who ever heard of a "Head Teacher" in a university!

While I agree with most of what you wrote, many uni English/Language departments (both unigwon and full department) do have a "head teacher", at least in Korea. Not saying it isn't a potentially silly and unnecessary postion, just that it is very common to have one.

This was in the Jobs-related Discussion Forum and then disappeared. My guess is that it was moved by a miss-click or something.
Anyway, back to the O.P.. The person asked about the Sociology department but most of the harsh posts seem to be about the English or Foreign Language Institute. Which department is it that is so bad? Gives us the heads up.
