I was under the impression no phone from the US would work here. A coworker said he just got a contract for his US blackberry no problem. Can someone explain this please.
Now I know they offered to "convert" the iPhone a few months back for a ridiculous price (600,000 or so). Is this still the only way to use a US iPhone or have things changed?

It's not so much that there is any sort of "conversion" involved, as there is allowance of your phone on the network.
Korea maintains a whitelist of all phones allowed on the network, and foreign phones are not included on that list. So you have to go and pay 400~500k won (depending on the route you take) and get it "certified" by the RRA, which is the Korean equivalent of the US's FCC. Then they will allow you to register it on the Korean networks.
The catch is, your phone also has to be unlocked to begin with. If you bought your phone in the US, theres a chance that you can use software hacks to unlock it, but those are dicey, especially if you ever wanna upgrade the software or have to restore it because something went wonky. Depending on the software level you're currently on it may not even be possible.
Hope that helps~ |

Nevermind my original post. Haha. I think my coworker is seriously confused. He is using his phone while roaming internationally with a US phone number. Doh! |
