|
|
Competition for air routes connecting Korea and the Philippines is heating up. Currently only the two flag carriers Korean Air and Asiana Airlines are flying from Incheon and Busan to four cities in the Philippines -- Manila, Clark, Cebu and Kalibo. But by January next year, domestic and foreign budget airlines will open new routes or increase the number of flights.
Jeju Air plans to fly Incheon-Manila five times a week from October, and Jin Air is working on an Incheon-Clark route five times a week starting in October or November. Air Busan is also reportedly mulling a service to the islands from Busan, to be launched in December.
In the Philippines, meanwhile, Zest Air began operating a Kalibo-Incheon service in December, which flies four times a week, and an Cebu-Incheon route in July, also four times a week. Cebu Pacific is considering increasing the Manila-Incheon route from seven times a week to 14 in January.
The reason for the sudden increase is permission from the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs last month for Filipino budget airlines to fly Korea's aerial routes.
Korea and the Philippines have not signed an Open Skies Agreement that allows the carriers of both sides to fly unlimited routes unlimited times in each others' aerial domains. Instead, they negotiate once a year to distribute licenses.
The Philippines is one of the favorite destinations for Korean tourists and therefore a treasure trove for airliners. A Jin Air staffer said, "For a budget airliner, traditional tourist destinations are more profitable than business destinations. Because the Philippines is just four hours away from Korea, many budget airlines had been working very hard to get the license to fly."

Great. I love the Philippines.
The country has its problems, but I still want to see them succeed. |

Things like the bus hostage fiasco certainly won't help matters any. |

Like I have always said... The only thing good about Manila is getting away.
7107 islands to choose from, why would anyone in their right mind want to stay in the NCR - crap-hole that it is.
Cebu is a better gateway anyway and anyplace in the Visayas or NE Mindanao is a better alternative than Luzon.

Cebu is better than Manila but well, it's not great overall. I just made my fourth trip to Cebu and I'm losing the feeling of the city's charm that I got in my first visit there three years ago.
Manila is a hole but perhaps the tourists were just on a day tour of the city. The Hong Kong government has rightly complained about how horribly the hostage situation was handled and the killing of a Korean right before a visit to Manila by the Korean foreign minister has probably soured things, too (but then again, a Korean getting killed every month in the Phils is pretty common, it seems). |

From what I read on a Korean site, it sounded like the bus was all oreans. All 22 or so of them. Apparently not. |

No, the initial report said the bus was loaded with Koreans but it was later found not to be the case. Still, it must be horrible to go through that while on vacation. |

I watched it live on Asia news yesterday and last night.
On the bus were 3 Filipinos (including the driver and tour guide) and perhaps 22 HK Chinese.
The actions of the NCR police were deplorable at best and border on Criminal (not to mention the fact that the hostage taker himself was a (recently terminated) drug selling, extortionist, dirty, ex-police officer).
If the autopsy reports aren't covered up I would estimate that at least 4 of the dead (not including the hostage taker) were killed by police from outside shooting INTO THE BUS with no clear view of the hostage taker.
It was actually comical to watch as they tried to yank the front door off the bus with a rope and truck and only managed to pull it off the bottom hinge just before they opened fire and killed the hostages.
HK has put a "do not travel" warning up in regards to MNL. Can't say as I blame them.

There are good places to visit in Luzon such as Mount Mayon in the Bicol region. |

That would be the Mayon Volcano that is currently under a PHIVOLCS evac alert (level 2) and actually had residents evacuated (level 3 & 4) as recently as this spring?
Yes, it is a nice view if you are into active volcanoes as a tourist destination but compared to everything else that is available in the Phils.... Luzon still falls to the bottom of the barrel.

The Incheon-Clark route that is coming should be interesting (and make Asiana Airlines reduce its ridiculously high fare for being the only carrier to provide direct service to Clark) and perhaps get rid of Angeles City's rep as Sin City (though I'm sure the girly bars will survive).
I think the next direct routes linking Korea to the Phils should be Gimpo-Davao and Gimpo-Baguio. I'm thinking it's time Gimpo gets a piece of the action. Koreans are flocking to Baguio and the reason for this is not clear, though I hear it's because Baguio is sunny but not hot a la Los Angeles-type weather. |

I did that exact same trip. Late night from Incheon - Manila, then bus to Clark and then on to KL. Definitely was a pain in the butt, but it did save a bit of money. If I was taking a long trip and had time to waste I'd do it again, but not for a one or two week trip.
I liked the Philippines, but it doesn't have the charm Thailand or the small part of Vietnam I saw had, and I still want to see more of Malaysia and Indonesia, so I doubt I'll ever go back to the Philippines. |

It's sad. Philippines has so many great and beautiful places, and could really launch as a tourist spot, even bigger than Thailand. But it's strife with corruption and incompetence.

I think given enough time, any country has the potential to become a great country by most measures. And well, the new president did create a facebook page for filipinos to report instances of corruption. Who knows? Only time will tell. |
