After hearing from numerous threads on this board that with "Windows 7" you can download the language pack and use English/Korean no problem, my friend tells me that he checked it out and it is ONLY available with Windows 7 Ultimate and not Windows 7 Home Premium. I would LOVE for him to be wrong, but can anyone confirm this nasty rumour? I just bought a notebook that will arrive today or tomorrow and I went for one with Windows 7 (not starter) cause I thought it would be great to have the luxury of using both English and Korean but my friend says I'm SOL unless I uprgrade to the Ultimate version.

Thanks for the info. I gotta say that really blows though. An extra $100 bucks if I want to simply use Engilsh/Korean together? I hate you Microsoft.

Maybe I didn't read the thread well enough, but I'm not 100% clear on what you want. Do you want to enable Korean text input (Korean keyboard), or have the menus and options in Korean? You can enable Korean text input on all versions of Windows 7 (except maybe Basic?), but you need Windows 7 Ultimate to set the entire OS to Korean.

However, there is kind of a hack to workaround the requirement for Ultimate. If you follow the instructions here, you can install them on any version. http://www.mydigitallife.info/2010/05/29/install-mui-and-lip-language-packs-in-any-edition-of-windows-7-or-vista-with-vistalizator/

No basically I want to run both ENGLISH and KOREAN on the same laptop that just arrived today. It will obviously come with Korean windows 7 Home Premium so I was hoping that a language pack wouldn't be an extra 100 bucks. But someone else just wrote above I see that he already had premium and upgraded to ultimate on Gmarket for 17000 won so that might be fine.

With Home Premium, you cannot purchase the language option. Only with Professional...

On W7 Ultimate, the language pack is free.

If the K language thing is going to be a big issue for you, just take it to your nearest computer guy (there will be three within 300 meters of your front door), and he will install W7 Ultimate-K for around 20,000w. Then all you have to do is install the language pack (google it) and you have an E OS.

Really, the OS in K isn't as big of a deal as you might think. Day to day, the software you will be using will be in English.

Well as I said I set the default system language to English so there is no need to go get it in Korean as my wife is perfectly fine having the system in English as long as she can read/write in Korean which she can. Thanks for the advice though......

All the notebooks that I looked at either had Windows 7 starter or Windows 7 Home Premium, those were the ONLY 2 choices. So it was not being cheap on my part by the way. If there had been a choice of getting professional or ultimate I would have probably got it. Can't purchase what you cannot find.

Sure, sure....I was just pulling your leg. However, to install W7Ult on a laptop is no big thing. Personally, I would 'acquire' a copy and use that...seems MS is having a great deal of difficulty rooting out OEM loaders.

True I could probably "acquire" a copy somewhere on the net, however I would hate to get that annoying message that "This is not a legit copy" pop up very often, or not be able to get updates etc. For now I'll play it straight and see how it goes. Thanks though.........

Try Vistalizator http://www.froggie.sk/
I've downloaded English version and it's working fine now and free.
and you can change language back to original if you want to.
