Point 3 is the best thing you can do. That's why the pirate bay is so popular - almost every torrent has a half dozen comments at least.

I use public trackers. I figure Korea's indifference to international copy-right is enough to keep me safe, though if I was back home I'd be a lot more careful.

Honestly I don't know that an external drive would offer that much protection. I guess if you seed things you've downloaded indefinitely then you may increase wear on your main drive, though I usually shut down torrents after I reach a 1.0 upload ratio. I you get an infected file, it won't matter where it's kept, as it will copy its payload to your system directory. Just make sure you let your anti-virus update regularly.

To whomever reccomended utorrents in a differnet thread - my hat is off to you sir / madame.

Low footprint and fast/ easy.

Very nice.

I like the OP am a relative newb also.

One quick question (If I may be permitted to hijack your thread good sir / mamdame)

When I go to setting on utorrents, should I leave it as it is or make any changes.

Someone mentioned trackers. What should I be doing regarding those...?

My MSE firewall said it is preventing torrents from home and private networks but allowing from public (which i'm using, my neighbour has wifi and doesn't have a password set up so I use it for free for as long as he has his router switched on lol, I love IT!!!) is this okay?

Any other safety pointers to keep my old pc safe?

I always read user comments etc. Am just paranoid about the uploading part. Imagining awful online fiends poking around in my information or putting nasties on my pc lol...!

If it works leave it

for the firewall simply add an exception

For your neigbour you will be impacting on their speed if you have no problem so be it.

Your computer is likely to be fine unless they are a super hacker (if they were they wouldn't have unsecured wireless

I don't see why you need to insult people every 2nd post?

to OP:

Torrents don't need to be scanned for viruses. they are tiny files that tell your PC where to look for other computers to download stuff from.
you can scan downloaded files afterwards, but if the torrent OP is reliable, it's not usually needed.

public trackers in a nutshell are places like piratebay that have a complex search engine built in that allows people to search for torrents.
there are a few public ones around, but for now, piratebay is really all you need. it's the most popular, resilient and populous of them all.

if you use piratebay.org it has a great torrentless option of using magnet links, which are far more superior to torrent technology and download things faster.

to use it do the following:

1- install utorrent
2- go to piratebay.org
3- search for stuff you want
4- click on the magnet looking icon on the bottom of the link
5- if the OP has a pirate icon, he is *usually* reliable and virus free
you should also always read the comments as someone mentioned in order to see if the file is real
6- wait for it to be downloaded and seed if you can
7- scan the files if you are still worried. you can use online scanner like Kaspersky, but if it's a cracked software chances are it will be seen by antivirus as malicious. usually people ignore that because most cracked applications are detected as malicious by anti virus apps.
e.g. 90% of games i downloaded off torrents are seens as viruses by my overly paranoid anti virus software. i have never had any problems with them though.

also downloading directly to your HD is not a problem. to be honest, it is very hard to f* up your PC and I am surprised so many people manage.

if you are really really worried about viruses, you can always go MAC and do torrents off it.
even iphones/itouches can download torrents now and they are virus free

Cool, thanks a lot for that. ^ ^ ^

What is a decent download speed?

I'm getting between 1kB p/s - 70kB p/s

It fluctuates a lot.

I guess like a posrter above said - I am sponging off my neighbour, so the speed is affected.

I'll go to Qook or Sk soon and get my own wifi internet account set up.

Can I expect the speeds to significanlty improve then? By how much difference?

Anyhow, thanks for the answers! I like this forum. i think I'm going to learn a lot more about computers.

Poor: Under 100kbps
Decent: ~ 250 kbps
Good: ~ 1 Mbps (I average this for common movies, music)
Great: Over 2 Mbps

Torrent speeds always vary though, depending on the amount of users currently seeding the file. They usually start off slow and ramp way up after 2-3 minutes.

Wow, I haven't seen speeds that low in like a decade!

Yes, your speeds should dramatically increase. I'm pretty sure whatever internet plan you choose, even if it's the slowest should effect a dramatic spike in your speed.

Are you sure it's between 1kbps-70kbps?

I am on SK's 100mbit connection (their fastest package) and wired I often hit speeds on torrents of about 10mbps. I think I d/led an Apple trailer at 22mbps.

Love and hate the internet here. It's so good but ends up occupying so much of my time.

Let's say I see a movie I'm kind of whatever about available on torrents or a forum. I'll just give it a shot cause it only takes a few minutes to download.

I've been very happy with SK, but I believe they are one of the few net companies without English service so you'll have to have a Korean help you.

G'luck!

Yeah they were the highest I was getting over a 5 hr period lol. The internet connection was 'poor' though, just 1 bar as it was my neighbours wifi I was using frommy apt. I guess the strength of the connection affects the download speed?

I'll defo get my own internet hooked up once I move apts.

Anyhting ellse i can do to increse download speeds. The speeds at my school suck too, but we are out in a myeon....

Port forward.
To get into the router:
Hit start button + R
type CMD (hit enter)
in the black box that pops up type ipconfig (hit enter)
enter the number that appears in "default gateway" into your browser.
Depending on what router you have, there are many different sets of instructions to port forward. This is an excellent resource on it:
www.portforward.com

Port forwarding allows you to connect w/ other people behind firewalls. It gives you a lot more sources to downlaod from, and I usually see a substantial boost when i do it.
