Was told today that we will be teaching 3 extra days at the end of the session to make up the classes missed during Chusok.
Anyone else hear this MADNESS? |

Just let them know you'll be expecting a ton of OT. |

Chuseok is a national holiday. You have those days off. Thus, those classes must be counted as overtime if you have to do them later. |

This is a common hagwon trick to keep the income flowing. However, you're entitled to this paid Korean holiday. My hagwon tried making me do extra classes to make up for my vacation days (ha, ha, good luck with that baby). Just say "NO" or ask for overtime payment for the catch up classes (get the agreement in writing before you teach the classes).
Be polite, but firm.
Good luck. |

Pretty common Hagwon tactic. They'll point to the 120 hours mentioned in the contract. You'll say it's a National Holiday, They'll agree, say you're not working those days and point to the 120 hours in in the contract. |

Hmmm. Sadly, it is not a hagwon. And I've been at this uni for years. It's the first time they've ever tried to pull this. I absolutely will not teach to make up for the holiday. I was just wondering if anyone else was dealing with this nonsense. |

i'll tell you what hongik told its teachers a few years ago is that they had to make up classes missed because of national holidays was because if they didnt make up the classes then it would be a less than 15 week min semester which korean education code requires. |

Not your problem. Refer them to the Korean labor board. Period. |

teachers went to the labor board, they were told the univ was within their rights to have them make up the days, apparently the 15 week calender trumps that.
now other 15 week univs i know this isnt the case. at my present univ we have a 16th week for make up classes but the only classes we have to make up are sick days and in the case of chuseok that friday |

interesting, because we also have a 16th week for make up days. so we only have to make up those classes for NON national holidays, right? which means that if we have not missed any classes we will not be required to do them?
I know this sounds like a stupid question, but our vacation is being lessened by 5 days (weekend + 3 days) because of these stupid make up days-which they are making us do regardless of how many days we miss.
can anyone send me a link to any labor sites related to this? |

How long is your vacation not counting the make up days? Does your workplace usually treat you fairly and well? Do all the professors at your University have to make up classes or specifically just the foreign English teachers? |

This sounds really dodgy to me. National holidays are national holidays.
Workers in NZ (and likely Aussie, too) would just make up the lost days by taking sick days. Sounds like your uni staff need to organise. |
