Got an email today from the Daegu MOE. It looks like they realized that making the NETs come in on school holidays for no purpose whatsoever was a bad policy, and so they decided to amend it. We no longer have to use paid vacation days to get the same school holidays as every other teacher in the school, at least not in Daegu. This is a resounding victory for common sense, and I really applaud them for taking this step.

On the flip side, I now have two extra vacation days that I won't use, because I was saving them for our two school holidays this semester. I also have a co-teacher who hates me (it's okay, because I hate her a lot more) because I didn't deskwarm on our end-of-the-semester school holiday (Seoulio can give you the whole story if you're curious). If this policy had gone into effect two months ago, she might not stare straight at the floor every time we pass each other in the hallway. Oh well, better late than never.

Are public school teachers in other cities seeing this policy change as well?

I try to avoid conversing with Seoulio whenever possible...I would love to meet that guy some day for coffee, just to see if he is really that big of a tool.

What's wrong with deskwarming?

I love deskwarming during school holidays or vacation. I'd have the whole school to myself. Razz

So now, apart from when you have camps, you are on vacation?

Very nice, must be pleased mate!

No, the summer and winter breaks will still have deskwarming. It's just the principal's discretionary holidays that are subject to the change.

I've always said that I don't have a problem coming in during the summer and winter breaks. Camps take up most of that, and my school usually schedules an advanced conversation class for me during that time. So I've never had any real "deskwarming" days during those breaks.

The principal's discretionary holidays are another story. Those are the holidays that you get 2-4 times per semester. Previously, the NET (and only the NET) was required to come in on those days. I thought it was a pointless policy, and I'm glad to see that it's being changed.

EDIT

I thought you were talking about winter/ summer holidays. You weren't 100% clear in your original post Wink

As for the days off you're talking about, I just got told to stay at home anyway, so it's basically just same old same old

Countrywide, I think very few schools have been hardass about having us desksit or give up holiday time for school birthdays, sandwich days, etc. Glad for the OP his district woke up on that one.

But I dont foresee any policy change in our duties during student vacation time. Camp, official vacation, or desk. A few public schools are still lax -- if thats you, do yourself a favor & dont boast. Is what it is.
