Great post - have to say however - most recruiters aren't good at responding at all - despite being ready with all the documents. It can take weeks or months to get a response!

Did exactly same and was in Korea with all documents and 3 years public school experience plus TEFL CERT.

Had 1 job offer in 8 weeks of searching and 2 phone interviews.

Good and timely suggestions and advice good for anyone looking for any job anywhere? So why come to Korea if you can and will do all that to get a job?

If one has to follow rules like this--and they are logical and prudent--one must admit that all the ads and recruiters are leaning toward deception in reassuring a person that "no teaching experience and no Korean language knowledge are necessary"; that in a world full of ready-made first-time eager-beaver nonteacher candidates who will be too ready and set to 'give it a go in Korea' to give all these points a thought at the outset, no experience and no Korean might just be a preferred standard among employers.

And if there's deception going on, it's best to apply these prudent principles to other fields of endeavor--ones that have a long-term future. No?

While it may seem to be none of anyone's business,

(and I tend to agree that free time should be your own)

You have to remember that foreigners do stand out and often things that would seem no big deal to us, seem outrageous to Koreans.

If you want to be a slobbering drunk in your off hours, yes that is your own business.

But it is also the hagwon director's business or your school principal's business if parents start complaining about your behavior.

Not saying it's right, but them's the cards fer waygukins in the land of K.

For whatever it is worth, my behavior outside of school has never been an issue with any of the schools I have worked for.

99.9% of all Koreans won't care what you do.

You have to live in town the size of a postage stamp or be drinking on school grounds to cause any kind of commotion.

This is not something I would be worried about.

Dude, I've gotten drunk in the park and had parents send their six year olds up to me with coffee.

Great advice, but don't bet on getting a job offer in a week unless you're: 1) white, and 2) attractive.

For the average teacher, you can expect to be in "queue" from a week to a month, or more.

+1

And if 1 and 2 don't apply, then:

3) Willing to live/work in the boonies.

I have a job interview tonight. Most of the recruiters I contacted were useless and some American recruiters tried to sell me BS but one Korean recruiter was really good. Just when I thought he had boogered off he called me with an interview.

As a white person who has been denied positions because "we just cannot hire another white person" (yes one person flat out said it), I can tell you it feels pretty good to have my race working in my favor for once!
