According to another website: "Background checks are required by Korean immigration and (new requirement!) starting Jan. 1, 2011, an FBI check is required if you are American. You will need to get an Apostille for your criminal background check (unless youre Canadian). See apostilleinfo.com for details. Canadian teachers must get a verification stamp from the Korean consulate in their jurisdiction.
It also states: Passport Photos: Six official colored passport photos will be required in total. THREE photos will be sent to Korean Immigration, ONE will be sent to the Korean consulate and TWO will be required for your health examination in Korea. All photos should be the same shot so just head to your nearest passport photo taker and order about 10 of them. (You can also use these for traveling to other countries from Korea that require visas."
Sorry but I'm a bit confused. This states "Canadians must get a verification stamp from the Korean consulate in their jurisdiction" and also states "THREE photos will be sent to Korean Immigration, ONE will be sent to the Korean consulate"
If I am American, does this mean I no longer need to visit the Korean Embassy just send in the info ? Or am I totally misunderstanding ?
Sorry to be so naive. |

They are also, for some mystical reason, demanding criminal record checks for a mere renewal of an E-2 as of January, 2011, in case you, y'know, somehow remotely commit a crime in your home country while you're here. |

What's the deal with the more increased/restricted criminal background checks? It's obvious that they want to keep out as many foreigners as possible.

They probably want to get the foreigners out as quickly as possible once they come in and stay.
It's the tactic of indirectly implementing an agenda that would not be accepted by the masses by if apply directly, so they use what seems to be unrelated policies, regulations, etc to achieve the hidden agenda. |

I've heard rumors over the past 2 years that the government wants to remove NETs from PSs by 2012 and have trained KTs fully take over that job. I haven't seen or read anything to confirm this. But the steps they are taking here seem to me that they are looking in that direction.

I'm planning to renew my current PS contract for next year and was told today by the Office of Education that I will NOT need an FBI check/apostile or the notarized and apostiled degree for renewing. They say that it is only necessary for people switching jobs and entering as new teachers.
Sounds too good to be true.
Of course I'm skeptical about this, though they seemed pretty certain. Anyone heard any similar info? |

In the past, immigration policy changes have left everyone, including immigration officials, running around like headless chickens. When CBCs were required the first time, the immigration office even told Americans to get a CBC from the American Embassy despite the Embassy repeated telling immigration and all Americans that the Embassy does not produce CBCs.
When drug tests were required, immigration was quick to drop the cannabinoids test after complications.
The point is that until Jan. 1, no one knows what immigration will really allow or require, not even immigration itself. |
