Hey,
I'm interested in buying one of these things but would just like to know the thoughts and opinions of those who already use one. I'm more concerned about the reading experience, as I've never been keen on reading from a computer screen, and any reading 'functions' this thing has. Novels I'm not too concerned about and if I were only reading novels I wouldn't bother with one of these things but I'll be using it for more academic texts. So, it'd be useful to be able to quickly get to different parts of the book and to also add notes or to somehow store passages and whatnot - can I do these things on the Kindle?
Thanks.
P.S. And with regards to the future of e-books, does Amazon intend on supplying every book they have in Kindle form? i.e. new releases and the backlog of current books in non-kindle format. |

I think they are only good for novels. I have an iriver story and it is great, i have read over 40 books over the past 4-5 months. i have 2000 books in my collection, the reading from a computer screen is a non-issue with e-ink.
As to using it for academic texts, I think it would be terrible. For example, you remember reading something 3/4 of the way through it, you would have to flick to an approx page then go one by one till you find it.
while e-inks response time is much better than it was it is still not as good as paper. I read about 10-20 slower than I do with an ereader than I do with paper |

I managed to come across a relevant review, I think it's just too early for anything other than novels. I probably won't be buying one just yet but I'd much rather be keeping the books I read than giving them away, if only I was guarnteed everything I wanted would be available .
I'll see how things progress. |

I'm in the habit now of checking out any book I'm interested in buying and seeing if it's available for the Kindle. A surprising amount are not.
The biggest advantage for me would be getting the latest issue of a magazine or the NY Times.
It's still a toss up for me on whether to get one or not. |

It's important to remember that just because a book isn't for sale in Kindle format, that doesn't mean you can't read it on your Kindle. Most e-readers support multiple formats; my Nook for example can handle pdf and epub. Kindle I think can now handle pdf and mobi? So really all you need to do is hunt down whatever book you want to read in any other format and convert it to mobi and you could read it on the Kindle. Amazon also, I believe, converts files from other formats to the Kindle's native format as a free service (or for a slight fee if you want it sent directly to the Kindle instead of emailed to you). |

The problem with reading magazines on the Kindle is the lack of colour, imagine National Geographic in black and white!? |

I ordered my Kindle 3 over Amazon and they delivered it to me here. It took about 4 or 5 days. I had to pay a customs deposit of about 40k, and shipping was 30k or so. I got the 3g model and a fancy case at the same time, so the total cost (including shipping and deposit) was about 320 dollars, and it was worth every cent. |

I read the economist on my kindle and the charts and graphs don't show very well because the bars are all in varying shades of grey and it's not easy to distinguish between them.
If you do get the kindle I think you should go for the DX. the extra screen real estate might come in handy. |
