I've been playing with the HDR app on my Iphone, and pictures near dusk/night or where it is dark come out fantastic. I know its nowhere near true HDR, but its leaps and bounds better than pictures taken without HDR.

My question is, if HDR pics can be taken on camera phones easily, why haven't point and shoot digital cameras added the features? It seems odd to me that there are only like 2 compact cameras capable of HDR.

they have, it's called bracketing.
They just don't combine them on device. It's a waste of battery power.

If you want to do the same thing, put the camera on a tripod shoot +2, 0, -2 and use photomatix to combine them after the fact.

I just think a simple software update will allow current and older digital cameras to do it.

I wish I knew a kickass programmer. We'd make custom firmware for digital cameras that would enable HDR.
