Help!
I need a "dummies" guide to downloading TV shows and films from the internet in Korea???
Starting from:
1. Buying a computer (spec needed / best place to buy in Seoul / price etc)
2. Getting internet connection (type needed / best) etc, etc...
3. Best website to download stuff from
4. Guide to how long it takes to download an episode of something...
Any info much appreciated |

Ask your boss to set you up with a cable modem. Always good to have as many bills go through your boss as possible since that way you get hurt less if he starts paying you late.

Get Kazaa Lite and do searches from that. I'm hunting down the last few episodes of Red Dwarf from that now and have finished off watching Invader Zim.

If its a popular show and you're DLing a bunch of files at once they should DL faster than you can watch them. |

You can get a new top of the line computer in Yongsan or Technomart for about 1.5 million. I find technomart to be more convenient plus its open during the week.

DSL. Its roughly 44,000 a month.

There are a bunch, but the best way IMO, is to find a site you have to pay for its. Its often a 1 time fee of about $15 US and then you can download an unlimited amount of new/old movies and not have to worry about whats offered on the free site/program.

I downloaded Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (among others) in about 2 hours. And thats a huge movie. |

Cheers for the info.
Can I get a secondhand computer to do the same job, rather than pay 1.5m for a new one?
If so, what should I be looking for as a minimum spec? |

I wanna pay the minimum, given that I'm pretty sure I don't need a "ferrari" computer for this type of thing... I literally will only be using it to download stuff from the net - episodes of TV shows etc.
Don't want to pay top dollar, only to use 10% of it's capabilities. |

Check out the various buy and sell forums of teachers in Korea. This site, english spectrum, korea herald etc.
People are always trying to get rid of computers when they leave etc. Pretty much anything that someone is selling will be fine for what you need. Just make sure it has a decent size hard drive. 10 gigs should be a minimum, 128 megs of ram and a pentium 3 or high processor. Avoid Celerons or Durons, they're absolute crap. |

Amen to Kazza lite...all of the benefits with none of the spyware, but it can be hard to find...here's a link.

Get down to Yongsan and buy a computer...I paid just over a million for a top of the line model(they delivered and installed in Ilsan the next day)...there's gotta be used models for cheaper... |

I have a version of kazaa lite where everything's free, it has no spyware, it searches endlessly for files, you can preview files as they're being downloaded so that you can cancel them if they're the wrong file...I think it's perfect. Any movie that I want - except for The Jerk - I can usually find. Someone mentioned searching for Cheech and Chong in a different thread...after 30 seconds on kazaa lite, I've found 11 complete movies, and 22 miscellaneous shows. |
news for you huck... there are only 6 or 7 movies credited as cheech and chong movies.. there are are few more with them acting together although those movies were never credited as cheech & chong movies and there are others but they have only been written by either cheech or chong &/or 1 or the other as a co-star.. they have been assistants on several more.. so when you say you found 11 complete movies... i assume you mean 11 complete files shared cuz there aren't 11 movies listed as cheech & chong in the world.
lets look at winmx again.... today, right now... there are 6 full movies.. the ones listed as cheech and chong movies. (not to mention all the miscellaneous and smaller files or cd1s and cd2s) this was after 5 seconds
and there are 167 full files shared
thats using 5 open nap networks as well... open nap? whats that you say?
learn how to use the thing properly before you compare

I've tried the others, but as far as finding what I want from numerous users, Kazaa Lite is easily the best. Plus when it downloads a file, it adds together everyone you're downloading from, which - when I used WinMX in the past - makes it a lot faster than WinMX and the old Napster... |
for years now winmx has been using multiple user downloads.
Quote: |
If you want it, PM me...but make sure you've completely deleted the old kazaa from your hard drive. |
don't bother... it is *beep*
EDIT: there are 13 users sharing full files of the jerk on winmx |
you kazaa guys should take off the blinkers. it like you are saying win 3.1 is just the greatest program.. it is probably cuz ya don't know how to work win 2k.
there is another program around called bit torrent - do a search on here to see how to install and use it.. |

Here's my two cents...not worth much here...maybe 40 Won? Take it or leave it I don't care. Sure Winmx supporters preach that it's faster and has a broader user base for DL's but I found it a pain in the ass to try and configure the setting to work properly. I never got the DL's (speed or availability that has been claimed of it)...chalk that up to my inexperience and lack of knowledge in the P2P world but hey it was just plain difficult to get running. Once I did it crashed my system a few times...enough for me to completely delete it. I tried other P2P programs like Shareaza, and Overnet but was equally unimpressed (although Overnet was very good for TV series - - i.e. all the new Smallville episodes). But as far as user friendly...Kazaa Lite K++...was the winner. You don't need to be a tech wiz to configure anything. DL's are fairly fast and there is a large enough user base to get files from. Hey I am not a "kazaa Lite or die" person but I just find it the easiest, least complicated P2P program to use.
And for those of you who still want it...the easiest way I've found is DL Kazaa and install it. From Kazaa search for K-Lite K++ and DL it...super fast...about 3 minutes and tons of DL's to choose from. Then unistall Kazaa and install K-Lite...a little lengthy but hey it works.
And by the way...regarding the original subject of this thread...I have a 497 MHz Dell Latitude CPx Pentium 3 with 256 MB RAM and a 30G harddrive. It has an ATI Rage Mobility Graphics Card (manufacturer) and I use Realone Player or WinAmp to play media files...hey it's not going to turn many heads but it does all I want: it's portable, exandable and I've seen these things going for $750.00 on E-Bay. I am sure you'll find the equivalent in Seoul. Cable internet...33, 000/month. And I use (obviously) kazaa lite K++ but do try Overnet if your having trouble finding TV programs.
So that's it...my 40 Won...cheers mate...

for tv shows, bit torrent blows anything else away...
winmx is harder to configure but i would recommend learning... from experience, i would not waste my time with anything but those 2
one of the posters from this board just sold an 850mhz with 256mg of ram for 250,000 or 300,000 not sure what it was... just for the record..
300,000 or 300 bucks should get you a reasonable computer. 500,000 should get you a p4.

is robbery. sometimes i think it is just better to buy a new, current system (2.8ghz) complete for 1,000,000 and be up to date and have warrenty.
ps i know i am a pain in the ass... but i have wasted much time in the past on things like this and people who say things like 'overnet is good for tv' just don't know any better. for example, i didn't know about bit torrent 4 months ago and i was saying winmx was just best for everything... then somebody told me about bit torrent and, as joe thanks says.. i was schooled
people say windows 3.11 is great if they have never used windows 2000 |

First you insult someone for spending a million Won on a "top of the line" new computer which is perfectly in line with one would cost, then you turn around and start quoting prices of used computers to show what a computer should really cost?

umm..
where did insult anybody for spending 1 million won on a new computer?
i have made the mistake of confusing a laptop and a desktop before.. i'll say it, i may have been wrong saying that price was robbery, i didn't realize the dell was a laptop. the op did not request a laptop btw. the prices i gave were genuine for a desktop which was the ops request. i never specified laptop anywhere.
