Is safety going down in Korea? I lived here for a bit in 2005, nothing happened. I lived here for a year between 2008 and 2009, and only had two instances, where I was made to feel uncomfortable by a Korean male outside of places like Hondae or Itaewon. This time, I've only been back for about a month and a half, and I've had two Korean males follow me home and one of my boyfriend's ex-coworkers corner me, grab my wrist, and try to grope me and tell me how I'm the most beautiful woman ever. People stare at me, the usual. I've always assumed it was because I'm tall (looking me up and down, I thought to see if I'm wearing heels), but now it's starting to creep me out and make me wonder if they're going to follow me. It's gotten to the point where I'm paranoid about locking my doors and sometimes wary to walk by myself. Does anyone else feel this way?

i'm a guy, but i have this sort of sense too. i just hear way more stories about this kind of stuff now than i did 3 years ago.

They do it to koreans way more..and more seriously...so dont feel too victimised..

ive not noticed it getting any less safe really..there have been stories like that for a long time..cant say ive noticed it picking up of late...ditto for guys

Young People are acting more thug. Salarymen are more stressed. NETs are more on edge (economic downturn). Old farts are closer to death and don't care.

All of this adds up to a slight, but perceptible rise in crime.

EDIT- The decline safety seems to be going on all around. Overall the level of safety in Korea is paradise compared to back home.

Where I run at night, Korean women continue to walk side by side, hand in hand, obstructing the running path, oblivious to the world around them, particularly the runners behind. For me, this is an indicator that Korea is still a relatively safe place.

However, I have notived that young Koreans strut with more agressive swagger these days. Douchebag thuggery has made its way to Korea, as well as an embryotic resentment towards life in general and school in particular, especially with HS and MS kids. Kids also seem tougher than K-kids on TV, though I am in working-class area.

Or, it might just me. Perspective was different when I was 35 kilos heavier in Korea.

Actually - a 25y.o. female British English teacher was stalked for 2 hours and molested just 2 weeks ago by a 31y.o. Korean man.

Last night at rush hour I was ready to yell at an ajosshi on the subway when he started complaining to some random soap-complexioned ajumma about how I had kissed my girlfriend in front of everyone. The car was so packed with Koreans it was ready to burst but I was pretty close to interrupting his little tirade and telling him to shut the h--l up. A little fear of my surroundings and my inability to adequately express myself in Korean held me back, but every day something like this happens, and after a year it really starts to build up. I'm the typical pasty harmless foreigner and I haven't been in a fight since the fourth grade but I think this country is so safe--for men, anyway--that I was closer than I've ever been in my life to laying it on a complete stranger.

Point being, based on my own idiocy, if there's some kind of new crime wave in Korea, I don't think it's come to Busan.
