|
|
I wanted to ask the gyopo girls who are in Korea. How is dating in Korea? I'm going to be in Korea at the end of this year and I was wondering what the dating scene was like in Seoul? Do most gyopo's just hang out with each other. Even in NYC, korean-american's usually only hang out with other korean-americans. Do you find it the same in Korea? I guess I'm just wondering if most gyopo girls end up dating other gyopo guys, korean guys or non-koreans?
A couple of my girl friends went to korea to teach after college and they said that most korean guys didn't want to date them because they weren't korean enough. |

Any experience is what you make of it. If you really want your Korea experience to be a Korean experience, don't take the easy route and meet up with English speakers your first week in Korea. People are afraid to be alone even for a second so they take the easy route. Next thing you know, 2 years have passed and you have been hanging out with Korean-Americans for the past couple of years.
To answer your question, I'm guessing most gyopo girls date other Korean-Americans or other English speakers. Sadly, I think a Korean guy will find it hard to introduce a gyopo girl who barely speaks Korean to his parents. With that said, I think you can become as "Korean" as you want in a very short period of time. So the whole dating a Korean guy thing won't even be an issue.
BTW, I'm a gyopo guy moving to Korea in about a month, so I don't know too much about Korea except from what I hear. But my intention is to mostly hang out with Koreans with a little sprinkle of English speakers here and there to keep my sanity. It might be a bit easier for me since I will be working in a company with only Koreans. |

Thanks, methdxman. I do agree that any experience is going to be what you make of it.
I guess I was just asking because the gyopo experience seems like its such a different experience and prospective then what's been posted on these forums. anyways, good luck in Korea! |

I think he means you're not going to find hardly any other girls, much less gyopo girls, on Dave's ESL Cafe
My impression is that in Korea the gyopos tend to stick with other gyopos, much like they do in America. Your best bet for meeting dating partners is probably church. All the gyopos I met in Korea made most of their friends at church. |

i was wondering the same thing about Gyopo Girls.
I have certain developed ideas based on some certain observations, but won't post them here as they aren't really factual in context.
Are we even supposed to call them Kyops?

my wife's friend is gyopo and shes dating a korean guy. She knew 0 korean before coming to korea after 1 or 2 years she was basically fluent ( she lived with korean family that she never met). She acts like an american girl very FAR from what a typical korean girl acts like. Anyways Her boyfriend is VERY interested in english soo that could be why they are together. |

It's like being blind and dating an American girl. |

I know a lot of gyopos, and none of them, male or female, have any trouble dating here, either with other gyopos, native Koreans, or with other English teachers.
There's no need to worry that Korean guys won't be willing to date you. Most of them will, and those that won't aren't worth it anyway. |

Korean guys don't think you're Korean enough? That's hillarious! You prob don't want to date them anyways. If you're a pretty Gyopo, there'll be lots of white guys waiting for you. Ha ha. Asian on the outside and western on the inside; best of both worlds if you ask me! |

I remember hanging out with a Gyopo girl last year a bit. She always had guys coming up to her and talking slowly and then complimenting her on HOW GREAT YOUR ENGLISH IS! It was too hilarious. |

I get this a lot too, actually from a lot of Koreans. I've been called a banana and a twinkie. I had very few asian friends before I came here and I have a few Korean friends since I've been here (most of my friends have been other foreigners here)
The second I talk to a Korean, they're interested at first. Then they realize I can't speak any Korean at all (at least conversationally). Strangely, I find it easier to date other Americans than other gyopos (most think I'm too "white washed") or Koreans. |
