Has anyone else heard about this? My coteacher got a letter today saying they wouldn't have funding for a teacher for next year. Luckily, I'm leaving anyway so I'm not too worried (although a little concerned about pension, reimbursements, etc) but my friends who are renewing apparently are no longer needed...

Pension has nothing to do with GEPIK (it is national and administered by the NPS). If you are entitled to a refund you will get it. Apply for it through the NPS before you leave Korea.

Your severance is required by law.
Your flight home is backed by the (provincial) government as well.

No worry.

As to funding for teachers in Pyeongtaek; GEPIK does NOT fund every school every year for a NET. For most schools, getting their NET is like a lottery and they don't always get one. They may be eligible for funding through EPIK or the city itself can pay for a teacher if the parents committee demands it.

I was told the same thing every year when I was working for a PS. Every year they managed to get the funding as well (for 2 of us).
