Long story short:

My wife just had a baby. Her job subsidises our apartment, so I have to quit my job to take care of the baby. We considered daycare and hiring a nanny- not worth it.

The problem is quitting my job mid-contract. If I can find someone to take my place no problem, otherwise it will be a hassle I think. I have worked for the same people for over 5 years. Never had a problem- great gig. But apparently it's hard to find a replacement. It's an after school program so the hours are great (12:20-5:15) and the pay is great (2.6ish with healthcare/pension) and there is none of the "open a bank account and give me the bank book" stuff some other programs have. But they also do not provide housing (the consider some of the salary a housing allowance) so that makes it hard to hire newbies who rely on their job to provide housing. Also you teach alone at an elementary school so there is little direct support. It's great actually (no one looking over you) but again hard for newbies who may not speak or read any Korean, don't know how things work here, etc. There is a Korean co-teacher but we swap between two nearby schools each day- she's at one the first day, and me the next- she's not in the room with me. It's just me. So they want someone who can manage classes of 6-15 students in size.

I said I think having a baby is a reasonable excuse- and they agree... but say it's hard to find a replacement still. This is heard through my co-teacher. Maybe they are pressuring her to find someone?? She suggested to me I buy an advertisement on the internet. But that's like $100!

I want to keep the door open because I want to come back to work at one of their schools when my son is old enough for daycare. It's a great gig and good money. Should I just drop the money and pay for an advert? I have been hearing the job market sucks, so maybe they can find someone?? Any ideas on how I can find someone in a couple weeks without having to pay?

Are there any websites other than Dave's where I can post a job advert but not pay?

Not that great if you have to find your own replacement.

Just give your contractually required notice and quit.

If they have a problem with that, just walk out the day after payday and be done with them.

Well done on the concise Subject heading. I like a good subject heading that is related to the text. Some lazy people would have just written "help" in the subject.

I agree, legally they cannot hold you after you work your notice or insist you find a replacement.
There is no way you can be black listed if you decide to return to work if that is what you are worried about.

The employer sounds slightly unreasonable re finding your replacement.

However, you liked working for them over the five years and want to maintain good relations with them so I say go ahead and look for your replacement. Pony up the $100 if need be.

For the reference, I'd try to find a replacement. However, there's nothing preventing you from giving your notice and leaving after it's complete. Especially if you've got an F-visa now (presuming that you're married to a Korean).

hmmm,

the reference is also a valuable thing too, good point. i am considering ponying up and paying it. wife is from NZ so no F visa. we are also considering travelling and i may get my CELTA and wife her DELTA in which case the reference would be good if i plan to "level-up" my job. it is a great gig and i could see coming back to it due to the familiarity with it, short daily hours and good pay.

Why not post the job opening in this thread? You may get some responses from people who are looking for a job like the one you have.
