|
|
To make a long story short, I recently posted about how the school I work for is changing contracts for the new teachers and I was fighting the changes.
During this time things really escalated with my school and I asked for my Diploma back because I just can't deal with the constant fighting anymore. They refused and told me that it was within their legal right to keep it until my employment was finished.
I asked all around the school and they just gave me the typical "I dont know, I cant help you." It is what it is" kind of BS. So, i called the police.
They show up, have a meeting with the director of the school and say that there is nothing they can do to help me get my Diploma. WTF? I then ask them who I should call, or who can help me. They stand there looking like rocks and have no idea. The degree is my property I am entitled to it.
So the police can't help me, who can?
Yay for Korea fails! |

If you really want your degree back - try calling the Seoul Help Centre for Foreigners (sorry, don't kow the number but someone on here will). They could help you contact someone else/higher up in the K police.
The diploma is your property, but all the school has to say is that they lost it - and you're not getting it back. Period.
Personally, if it's that bad, I'd be outa there - and not worrying about a pice of paper. |

Do you really want your diploma back? Go to the boss's office and sit there until he turns it over to you. Refuse to do anything else at all.
Or just get the thing replaced. Of course, I'd pull a runner on that scum. |

I wonder if they would actually be able to do anything. Both times I contacted them a few years ago they were utterly clueless helping with anything other than where stuff is located. |

If they can tell you where your diploma is hidden, you can walk into your boss' office and get it yourself. |

Buy a heavy claw hammer and a crowbar. Bring it to school. It wont stay locked up for long if you know how to use them. The police should have a record of their visit and why they were there so you shouldnt have to worry about paying for any damages. You are just retrieving your property that was stolen from you. You should also video tape yourself asking your boss for it with him refusing to give it you and also video the retrieval as well. |

How does that work if the police told me that the school has every right to keep my diploma? Wouldnt I then be in violation? |

It's yours. They can't, legally, keep it. The (lazy, maybe racist) cops may not see it that way, but a judge will - should it go that far. That's why I said videotape your boss refusing to return it and yourself retrieving it. |

You kidding me?
Scumbag stelas my pesonal property and refuses to hand it over I go into his office and tell him very calmly and sincerely that I am a ____ year old man, not a child, not a slave and if he doesn't hand over my property right now he is going to get hurt and I don't care if I get arrested, deported or not. Or maybe I see his wallet / car keys on the desk, pick it up and tell him he can have it back when I get my diploma back.
A question for madoka and steelrails - what is it that makes employers think pulling stunts like this is okay? |

No, I am not kidding you. The two choices I offered are the most viable for you that do not get you sucked into the legal system as an offender.

Do any of that and you'll end up arrested. Care to guess how much concern the courts are going to have over your diploma missing?

It comes from the thinking that "the boss is the boss." Laws and even good management procedures don't stand a chance against that thinking. |

Before you take anyone's advice and leave without your diploma, be sure to know the replacement system from where you received it. I havce a BA. 2 MA's and a PhD. All from different schools and in different states. They all have the one original diploma only system. If you need to have it replaced, it will look just like the original, except it will clearly say on it "THIS IS A COPY". Could cause big problems in the future.

Another great example of the "Never, EVER, EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE YOUR DIPLOMA TO YOUR EMPLOYER" rule not being followed.
Any newbies out there reading this, take heed to this advice. |

My replacement only costs 5 bucks, which is why I never thought twice about giving it here and I am going into my 4th contract.
I guess it is more about the principals involved in the whole situation.
My thought process led me to believe that they would back down when I called the Police, they did not and to my surprise the police actually supported them.
More or less I am just infuriated in the ineptitude of the legal system here.
Going to the labor board on Monday (again), wish me luck. |
