"Simon" of "Eat Your Kimchi" is now officially employed by the Korean government, the Korean Tourism Organization. He joins a list that is growing. You wonder why so many expat bloggers ignore any of the thornier issues of being an expat in Korean or of working in Korea? Well wonder no more. Just keep it in mind if you read their blogs.

My buddy Simon from Eat Your Kimchi is the new editor of Korea Taste: a government website run by KTO (Korea Tourism Organization). I've been writing for the site for some time and I think it's the best government run food site in Korea. Simon has an incredible following on Eat Your Kimchi and I think he'll be able to use it to promote Korean food around the world.
Here's what Simon had to say: This is Simon from Eat Your Kimchi. I wanted to use this as an opportunity to announce that I�m going to be volunteering as editor for KoreaTaste.org. Over at Eat Your Kimchi we pretty much only make video posts, and don�t really have any writing on there. That�s too bad, because there are lots of things I�d like to write about, but just don�t have the platform for. So I�m going to be here at KoreaTaste.org writing about one of the best parts about Korea: the food! Sure, I�m no expert at food like ZenKimchi or Seoul Eats or Fat Man Seoul, so I can�t offer any expert advice on Korean food the way they can, but that doesn�t mean I don�t love it any less! So, from now on, I�ll be writing about any of the cool things I find about Korean food, be it some nice pictures from another blog, or a great video on YouTube, or an interesting article online. I look forward to reading your posts as well. If you have something you want to share, set up an account and blog about your findings here as well! Link back to your site and I�ll check it out for more info.

Is a volunteer really an employee? (officially employed by the Korean govt) ???
I read his site once and it was mostly cupcakes and muffins he was eating. |

Not all bloggers ignore the thornier issues, and those bloggers are usually the most interesting writers. I can think of at least 3 or 4. A lot of people write 'glossy' blogs because they're writing for their families or for new visitors and/or are understandably trying not to be whiny bitches.
I don't think him working for them is any conflict of interest. Good for him for accepting the opportunity. |

Nice detective work, newb. You totally missed that Robert Koehler (Marmot's Hole) is paid by Seoul govt (He is editor of Seoul mag), yet that has not affected his ability to maintain the most popular blog in Korea and regularly takes hard looks at government practices and policies.

Sure...but he isn't teaching here anymore...so I'm not sure what VISA he would be on. He left his school a couple of months ago. His wife is still teaching though. |

If expat bloggers work for the Korean government then they should tell everyone up front. Bloggers that help "sell" a perfect version of Korea to foreigners are selling a load of BS to foreigners who may be thinking about coming to Korea to teach. By making everything appear in Korea appear to be happy and fun they are helping to set new teachers up for failure. The bloggers don't have to complain about everything; just present the bad with the good. In other words, BE HONEST with the readers. It's all about respecting your readers.

Robert Koehler runs a political blog. We're not talking about politics. Simon and Martina both claim to be foreign teachers in Korea. What they post or choose to ignore about teaching in Korea is more relevant to the discussion because other potential foreign teachers just may believe that everything about teaching in Korea is "sunshine and lollipops" because that's what is posted on their blog and in their videos. Helping "sell" a sanitized version of teaching in Korea to foreigners is not the job of an honest blogger.

Their jobs as English teachers are irrelevant. They won't be blogging about teaching. It's a food blog. They'll be blogging about food. |

Dude, I went to Harvard and got an MA in Blogging.
Oh wait, I didn't.
Because there are no degrees in blogging, let alone industry accepted qualifications.
I say more power to the food bloggers. Sink or swim. Be successful or not. No bother either way for me. If someone writes an awesome food blog, good on 'em. If it's just average.. well.. ratings/readership will tell in the long run. |

There are, however, degrees in Culinary Arts and Gastronomy. There's also professional experience working with food (and I don't mean McDonalds). |
