Is it a purple card with a Visa logo and the words "Global" and "check" on the front? In the back it says "invalid for purchasing overseas merchandise" so that's a NO. |

The purple Global Visa card I described above works fine for online shopping at Korean websites. It works as a debit card (deducting your purchase from your bank balance), not a credit card. |

No, other than gmarket, most shopping websites don't accept foreign ID cards to create accounts. |

Because there are debit cards with credit card logos (VISA/MASTER) that can be used at POS (points of sales) where major credit cards are accepted.
I'm sure you know this but you're being a smart ass about it. |

In Canada we have no such thing. Credit cards and debit cards are two very different things and no debit card has a credit card logo on it. If you don't have a live device to check your funds, the debit card doesn't work. |

I've been in several banks questioning people about this.
KEB Debit cards cannot work overseas or on overseas websites. They have the Visa logo, but it still doesn't work - it gives an error. They have an international credit card that will though.
Shinhan have a debit card that works internationally, though they have several which don't so you need to make sure you're getting the right one. Mine works and it's a 'SMORE' type. |

KEB debit cards can be used at ATMs overseas though you may have to inform KEB that you intend to do so before your trip. You can't use it for debit transactions at a store. The KEB credit card works fine overseas. |

Ah, that's correct. You can use it at ATMs only. Forgot to say, since I was looking for online shopping myself. |

To sum up (I have the KEB Visa check card too)
G-Market: YES
ATMs in Korea: YES
ATMs worldwide: YES (I used mine in Japan without telling the bank, and it still worked. Must be used in Global ATM thought).
Ebay/Amazon/Hotels/International Sites: NO
To get a KEB International Credit Card, you must have been a Korean resident for over 1 year.
My advice? Use your co-teacher's credit card and wire her the money from your account. |

I recommend you visit Shinhan Bank Seoul Global Center in the Seoul Finance Center downtown between Gwanghwamun and City Hall. They offer EXCLUSIVE banking for foreigners. The staff speak English and their service is amazing. They offer about 4 different credit cards with all statements and info in English. The number is 02-773-3131. |
