I also would not accept that, especially in my 2nd year.
Jeju is not a place I would want to live. Rain everyday almost, year round. I'll pass. |

I wouldn't touch that either. That school would be looking for a newbie with absolutely no idea of what they could get or what the basic minimum is for benefits such as severance and overtime rate.
I pity the fool that takes a contract like that. |

somtimes I wish we could show the school just how "dumb" they're being by posting such non-sense. |

I would have done it in 1997 or 1998.
But these days, I won't ever work in a hakwon full time.
Well if they paid me 50-75k per 40min class I could, but since that will never happen, I won't do hakwons.
The only way I'd ever live where I work is if it was dorm or apt style where ALL the teachers lived, IE professor housing, and ALL the utils were included. |

There's absolutely no way.
The only way I'd take 1.8 million is if there was a couple of months of paid vacation and low teaching hours. Otherwise, it would have to be over 2million.
And, yes - Cheju is a nice enough place... but it's certainly not as fantastic as many Koreans make it out to be... I certainly wouldn't take less money just to live there. |

If anyone would even entertain the idea of working in such a place....
can you imagine just how screwed up their life is now! Let alone what it would be like after signing such a contract! |

You've got to give them credit for being honest and up-front about screwing you. My suspicions tell me that there are a lot of jobs out there like this one -- you just don't find out the truth about the details until after you're stuck there. |

Too low even for me. But at least they offered to pay for your visa trip.
I was recently offered a position for 1.8 - 40 hours a week plus 2 Saturdays a month. (These are not teaching hours, but office hours)
I was a bit tempted as it was 1 on 1 lessons to adults, but that was until I read employee/employer manual.
They expected me to fill in for "free" if another teacher was sick or on vacation. Which would mean some pretty long days!
They expected me to travel to Seoul at my own expense for a week of unpaid training.
They would not offer a ticket at the end of my contract, since I was already in Korea. (well, I don't like this so far)
They said they would pay for a visa trip to Japan, but get this, right below that it said that the cost of the visa trip would be deducted off the first paycheck! How dumb do I look?
They said if I were quit or get canned early, they would withold 600,000 won from my final pay to cover any unpaid bills. (I suppose that would be reasonable if I thought I had any chance of getting that money back once the bills had been settled, but it looked a bit shakey to me)
They said I would have to attend unpaid training courses throughout the contract as well, at the whim of the director.
So what are the enticements here? (none that I could see)
I'm not opposed to training, but this seemed a bit excessive.
Needless to say, I am looking elsewhere.
Best of Luck
Always read the entire contract - employee agreement before you agree to anything. |
