(CNN) -- The 2010 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Liu Xiaobo, a leading Chinese dissident who is serving an 11-year prison term, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Friday.

Liu was sentenced in 2009 for inciting subversion of state power. He is the co-author of Charter 08, a call for political reform and human rights, and was an adviser to the student protesters at Tiananmen Square in 1989.

I feel so happy right now... his profile will rise. Watch the Chinese state media demonize him in the next few weeks, however.

Seaching about him on the Mainland is drawing blanks. CNN and the BBC as well as Reuters and the Nobel website itself was not working during the announcement.

Beautiful! This man was an advocate of peaceful change and gradual change and he got slammed by tht thugs in Beijing. Glad the prize commitee had the balls to stand up to the chinese. A worthy selection unlike some in the past.

Beijing threatened the Nobel Prize, and the Nobel delivered.

Its like the CCP never had teenagers.

With the latest winners being Obama and now this Chinese guy, the Nobel committee seems to be using the award for political purposes rather than for any real results.

The only political purpose is your statement.

The man urged China to reform slowly, peacefully, gradually. just like it did with it's economy.

He urged 1.3+ billion people to change the way they live peacefully and gradually. And he was arrested for it.

The Chinese government says he is a 'criminal' who broke Chinese law.

Fine.

Nelson Mandela was a 'criminal' in South Africa who broke South African law.

Do you suggest Mandela did not deserve the award? Or Desmond Tutu?

China is a lot larger than South Africa.

I concede, Obama didn't really do much, except promise to get out of Iraq (which is happening).

But this man Liu Xiaobo, deserves the prize.

And China, blocking cell phone messages and the internet--only proves the importance of this award.

I am surprised that the Nobel skeptics have not mentioned the Prize's most controversial recipient; none other than Henry Kissinger of course.

Nothing 'quasi' about it. There are dozens of distinct parallels between the rise of China in the last two decades to the rise of Germany in the 20's and 30's.

nothing meaning to scare anyone, but I could name a lot of examples.

Their vehement disregard for free-thinking is both pathetic and terrifying. As much as I hate WMDs, thank *beep* for Nuclear Deterrents....
