A buddy at work and I were talking about how great it'd be to have a year-long competition comprising all the major sports with the winner being whoever has the best average placing at the end of the calendar year.
I'm wondering would there be interest from people in joining such a league for 2011.
Obviously the details and scoring and how exactly money would be paid out can be hashed out in detail through this thread, but I envisage something like this:
A year-long effort including, chronologically: Baseball, Association Football (soccer), American Football, Hockey and Basketball.
Football (soccer) can be taken out depending on (lack of) interest.
I reckon entry fee would be between 100-200K for the entire year, payable upfront.
No keepers, all leagues would be 1-year.
Probably easier to do points rather than rotisserie or heads up, but that can all be discussed later.
I'm thinking NO TRADES, purely because every league I've ever been in has people arguing about someone winning a trade. I think for the sake of harmony, (though it's less interesting) you're stuck with your draft and the waiver wire.
I'm really interested in hearing from anyone who has attempted this. Finding people who play all fantasy sports is very difficult.
For the sake of transparency, I'll say that I'm Irish, and a good NHL and soccer guy. I'm usually in the money for Hockey and Soccer.
Doing my first ever American football league now.
I've never been into a basketball or baseball league, in fact I can't name 5 players from either sport, and have never even watched a game.
so I'm not proposing this cause I think I'm gonna kick ass. I just think it's an interesting idea.
I guess we'd have to have a sit-down before the big start. That could be in the city where the most players hail from. I assume that would be Seoul. I'm personally from Daejeon, and I'm sure I can get 3/4 other guys here to join this caper.
Ideal number would be 12-16.
All drafts would be online in yahoo at say...Sunday night 9 or 10pm Korean time. You miss the draft, well, you set your watchlist beforehand and let the computer do it's stuff, or have a trusted buddy sit in.
If you're joining this league, you wouldn't be making a cmmittment to be brilliant, just that you'd do your roster every week and not give anyone a free win (if it's head to head)
Can anyone see any glaring problems with this that I haven't thought of? |

Not a bad idea.
However, I think 16 teams is way too many, especially if there are no trades.
I'm in a 14 team football league, and even that is too many for my taste. If you don't have a good draft, it's pretty much a lost cause.
The talent on the waiver wire is so watered down, you can't do nearly as much as you could even in a 12 team league.
That said, removing trades would be one less thing for everyone to worry about. I've seen a number of fair trades get vetoed, and accusations usually fly about collusion and/or ghost teams.
It's good you're trying to get some agreement about how things would work best.
I'm mostly a baseball and hockey guy, but do American football too. I know basketball, but haven't bothered with a fantasy team.
Soccer's OK, but I have no idea how fantasy works with it.
Anyway, it's a good start and I'll stay tuned for more details. |

I am on a 8 team league and I think even that is a bit too much due to how we had to do the draft. Some teams are STACKED and others are...also I HATE that some players aren't drop able even though in a particular season they are performing really really badly. I have 3 undroppable players in my football team and I really wish I could drop 1, as in the first 4 weeks second tier players have all done better.
You could set it up that trades have to be approved by a commissioner. The way to make it semi fair if you were going to do 4 sports and an 8 team league is have 2 co-commissioners for each sport, that way everyone gets a chance at it.
Also, we are using ESPN's fantasy football. IMO it beats out Yahoo's. Check and find yourself a good site that has lots of options.
I think you couldn't pay me to do hockey. There are way too many teams/players/games in a season. I like football. It is short, and the TOP players number say around 100, so it is easier to keep track of who is good and who isn't good. |

I think the "can't drop list" is changeable in the league settings, but I agree that all players should be drop-able, and something we would all have to agree on beforehand is how the waivers work.

Even this usually creates fuss, especially if the commish is involved in said trade.

I'll check it out. I'm certainly not tied to one supplier, but would be in favour of choosing a free, reliable site with adjustable settings.

Football has MORE teams than NHL! Baseball has DOUBLE the games of NHL.
But I hear what you're saying. If it were only 8 teams, (and judging by the lukewarm response here thus far, it might well be) then you'd only need to draft 128 players, the roster is the same size as Football. Admittedly the season is slightly longer. |

These are the kind of insights I'm interested in hearing, and it looks like 8 or 10 is much more likely than 16. That was a bit ambitious on my part. I guess I over-estimated the amount of people who'd want to get involved.

This is what bums me the most. Other teams don't want a fair trade to happen so they complain to the commissioner and it gets vetoed. Better to just have no trades, though it's by no means a deal-breaker.
I mention it because I'll be joined in this league by three close friends. If we play with 8 other guys who don't know us, all trades will be viewed suspiciously, regardless of whether they are or not.

Everyone would have to be on board with all the details beforehand or it wouldn't work, I don't think.
Soccer would be done just based on goals for the season. It's not as statistically analyzed as north American Sports, so there isn't the categories there to play. |
