And this makes her different from any other famous athelete how?

Given the situation, I'm sure if you were in her place, you'd do the same thing.

I assume it was her mother and not the athlete who signed the contracts.

Sure I am speculating but when a washed up dude in fake sport like figure skating still hasnt moved on . I mean the guy is in his fifties and the best he can do is cling to some long ago 15 seconds of fame. Actually I had never heard of this guy and I dont know anyone else who has but I would say if your best bet in life is the crumbs that a teenager tosses you Well!!

The Korean way for Yu-Na to escape her mother's greedy claws would be to get married. However then she would have to deal with violent cheating soju bore...who would be after her cash.

If Yu-na doesn't wise up she will become another tragic Korean woman celebrity.
However all the signs are she doesn't have the guts to break away from the controlling misery of the predictable Korean family set-up.

I seriously think this is way too harsh.

The girl is like 19, but remember, Korean 19 year olds are about as mature as a 16 year old North American, maybe even younger. Does she have the maturity to run her own life? I doubt it very much.

I doubt she will marry the typical Korean dude as well. I saw some interviews with her and the fact that most Koreans are crazy had her crying. Yeah, her mom might be a control freak, but it can't be all about the money. I think about it as a parent: if I dedicated my life to my kid and invested heavily in their sport or talent, shouldn't I get something for all my efforts? I am not saying I would be all about taking all my kid's cash, but I would honestly feel like most of that money was there because of my efforts as a parent to push my kid and invest in my kid to get them to where they could make some money. Why shouldn't her mom feel the same way? Also, the girl is 19 and immature, she should have someone looking out for her. I doubt she will ever be poor, and even if her mom took most of her money, do you think that it would be forever? This is Korea we are talking about. The kids eventually get everything their parents own or have.

Anyways, before criticizing the mom, think about what you would do as a parent, especially if you gave up 19 years of your life to be at your kids side as their were doing their thing. Also think about Korea. Once this girl is past her prime for advertising, her 15 minutes will be done. She really needs to milk it while she can.

She'll probably end up marrying some K-American from California who doesn't even know she is an Olympic champion.

Parents of these talented children usually sacrifice a lot. I read about an American baseball player who was talking how his parents didnt take vacations so he could go to special baseball camps in the summer. Nothing wrong with them getting something. All the hate expressed in this thread for Koreans and their culture because some neverwas lost his job. Kind of sad. Living in a car down by the river Brian Orser with his trophy for turning around on skates.

Actually, although he did win a world championship, he never won gold at the Olympics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Orser

He is the 1984 and 1988 Olympic silver medalist, 1987 World champion and the 1981-1988 Canadian national champion.
