Some of korean hagwon co-workers were telling me about their private lessons (one teaches math, and one english). They told me they charge 100 000 won an hour. I've also met a guy that charges 400 000 for three hour english sessions. Are these guys bullshitting me? They all seem genuine and I have no reason to doubt them.
Is this possible in the small poor town I live in?
If so why would they bother to work at the hagwon for 35 hours a week for 1.5m or less? I thought maybe its a way to poach students?

Hey TB-

ask those people what kind of degrees they have. if they happen to have a masters degree from a big-name university...then some people might acutally be willing to pay the money. that's what i heard anyway.

It's true and yes, credentials are critical--usually its the kids preparing for highschool or uni entrance exams who will pony up that kind of money. It's not really common, though--the average elementary or middle school parent isn't going to throw around that kind of money just for general English lessons.

Prep time and correcting are key too--these parents usually want you to do more than just talk to them like an average private; if you try to sleepwalk through it the lessons won't last long. The pay is double but so is the effort the teacher must make. The best way to find out about such work is through connections, but it can take awhile to fall into such a job. Once you do, though, reputation and references make it easier.

I am sure it does exist T-bear.

However:

1- Please consider the BS factor here. Many teachers here make these claims....

2- A 100 000KW/hour lesson would probably mean a *lot* of prep and effort as these students are most likely preparing for Uni entrance exams or jobs. This is not your run of the mill pvt.

As stated here, you would most likely need credentials to get such pvts.
I do not think a "dude with a B.A. in interior design from Buttville Uni" should expect such jobs. Laughing

And has it occurred to you that actually chargin a 100k for an hour with a kid is just about raping them of their cash. I mean do you have a charcoal for a heart and fart for a conscience?!

I pay 7,000 won for a haircut. Other people pay 10-20 times that to go to an upscale high-profile 'hair designer'. I don't pay more because it's not worth it to me. It is worth it to other people. Do I resent the 'hair designer' for charging a ridiculous price (in my eyes)? Nope. Do I resent the people who pay the high price? Nope.

Some people are willing to pay 100,000 won an hour. Is that the teachers fault? Nope. Why let it bother you?

I was just offered a private for 100,000 which I turned down. Not interested in doing illegal work and I'm too damn busy with my personal life to have it disrupted and hijacked by teaching a one on one class which is extremely boring and difficult.

Privates aren't really worrth it to me anyway...catering to someones every whim, and trying to fulfill his fussy idea of what English is, and what teaching involves... travelling somewhere on a saturday or sunday...their constant attempts to prolong the lesson..even if it means driving you home round-aboute route in their car to extend their English practise session...etc etc...Naaaaahhh
