Can chewing gum be a silent exercise? |

I hate this!
I get the whole "making noise whilst eating" thing. Yes, you are enjoying a delicious meal and are showing the cook just how much you appreciate it.
Gum, though? Freaking cows chewing cud. |

Try it on a long bus trip. I almost went berserk this one time. Should have. |

This is why I always carry an ipod and close my eyes on long trips. That, and the motion sickness. |

For the same reason that some ajoshi steps out and asks you (foreigners) to shut up. |

Haha I had JUST this on... Friday I think. I swear she was looking at me as she chewed for about 25 minutes too. I kept looking round to check but she'd look away. |

IPOD is the golden rule of travel and commuting. I don't so much care about a little gum smacking, I wish people would freshen up a bit more before venturing out from home so you don't have to smell all that funkyness. |

Now you know the difference between a lady and a woman/female.
I am not trying to be facetious...but I do not ever recall seeing, meeting or knowing a "socially" educated, refined, sophisticated korean woman.
At first meeting, I am thinking...she has it together! And then after getting to know her....no grace, no tact, no social skills, etc...
Have any of you meet a korean women that has grace and is sophisticated like your mom? Or like The Beav's mom!
I mean, even back home, we have bimbos...and folks know right away that "this person has no grace, etc." But korean seems to be full of bimbos.... |

Never mind the gum smacking. What about all the spitting? Now that's really sophistocated. |

Yet spitting is ubiquitous throughout a pretty big chunk of Asia. Don't lay that one on Korea's doorstep. |

Is this a Seoul thing? I don't think I've ever met a Korean woman over university age who smacked their gum. |

Where are these gum smacking ajumas? In restaurants? On the bus? Maybe I'm in a no-gum-smacking zone or something. Six years here and I can't think of a single incident with gum smacking that sticks out. I'm sure I've heard it here before, but nowhere near on the level to attribute it "phenomenon" status. |

You're fortunate. It's a near constant on buses and the subway in Seoul and Incheon. I heard it a few times in Busan, but I've only been there a couple of times. |
